The Mitchell Thorp Foundation(MTF) is a nonprofit organization, commemorating Mitchell’s shortened life of 18 years and his five-year heroic struggle against an undiagnosed illness. Our Mission: Supporting families whose children suffer from life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders, by providing financial, emotional and resource support to their desperate situation. Our Purpose: To make a difference today for a child who is fighting for their tomorrow, while bringing hope, relief, and transforming lives in the process. A public 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides support throughout California. Our focus is to provide individualized aid to meet the needs of the child and family through our Medical and Home Assistance Programs, Healing and Wellness Programs and Conversion Van Program (see programs for more detail)

A cancer free birthday wish for Ava!

What better way to celebrate this incredible milestone and her 7th birthday than with a magical trip to Disneyland?

After everything sweet and strong Ava and her family have faced, she had one special birthday wish: to spend her big day at Disneyland with the people she loves most.

Through the Mitchell Thorp Foundation’s Champion Day experience, we were honored to help make that wish come true by providing Disneyland tickets, a two-night stay at the Disneyland Hotel, and a gift card for meals.

This Champion Day was about more than a trip. It was a chance for Ava and her family to celebrate her strength, her healing, and this beautiful new chapter together.
Her mom shared this heartfelt note with us:
“We had such a magical, memorable, and happy time celebrating Ava’s 7th birthday! Thank you so very much again for paying for our hotel and our tickets! We will never forget this special time that we got to spend together with our sweet and strong Ava! She felt so special! She loved it all!”

Ava, we are celebrating with YOU! Your courage, your strength, and the wonderful news that you have been cleared of cancer.

These are the moments your support makes possible. Moments when families can set aside hospital visits and medical worries and simply celebrate life, love, and being together.

At the Mitchell Thorp Foundation, part of supporting families means connecting them with practical resources that can help ease some of the financial pressures they may be facing.

Did you know that SDG&E® offers several assistance programs to help customers reduce their energy costs and improve energy efficiency?

California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) Program
The CARE program provides a 30% or more discount on monthly energy bills for eligible households. Eligibility is based on household size and income, or participation in certain public-assistance programs. Applying is quick and easy, with no documentation required. Find out if you qualify at sdge.com/CARE.

Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) Program
FERA offers an 18% discount on electric bills for households who exceed CARE income limits but still meet FERA guidelines. Households of one or two are now eligible. Learn more at sdge.com/FERA.

Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) Program
The ESA program provides no-cost, energy-efficient home improvements to income-qualified customers. Services and products may include attic insulation,energy-efficient refrigerators, weatherstripping and more. The program aims to reduce energy use and help lower bills. Medical Baseline Allowance

One Powerful Mission. A New Generation of Servant Leaders.

The Mitchell Thorp Foundation’s Youth Leadership Council officially kicked off its first meeting of the year at our training facility, and the energy in the room was inspiring!

This year, 50 students enrolled to be part of the Youth Leadership Council, demonstrating an incredible desire among young people to grow, serve, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Our first meeting included a powerful discussion about Servant Leadership, what it means to lead with compassion, put others first, listen well, and use your gifts to strengthen your community.

We are also thrilled to welcome Dr. Dominique Marinello to the Mitchell Thorp Foundation team. Dominique holds a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University with a focus in Education, Mind, and Body Studies. Her experience, passion for education, and heart for developing young leaders make her a wonderful addition to our staff.

At Mitchell Thorp Foundation, we believe leadership is not just about being out front. It is about showing up, serving others, and leading with compassion and purpose.

We are excited to pour into these students throughout the year and watch them grow into the next generation of Servant Leaders who will bring hope, kindness, and positive change into our world.

Here’s to an incredible year of learning, serving, and leading together!
