Re: Clarification Regarding the Identity and Mission of Jatson Choekhorling Community of Carlisle, PA

Dear Members, Prospective Members, and Fellow Dharma Sanga,

On behalf of the Jatson Choekhorling Community of Carlisle, PA, I, Karma Yonjon, serving as Acting President, together with our Board of Directors, write to you in accordance with the mission, vision, and bylaws of our organization. The Board has carefully reviewed recent misinformation circulating within the community regarding the identity and affiliation of Jatson Choekhorling, and we wish to provide a clear and authoritative statement on the matter.

At the outset, we sincerely thank the members and non-members who have taken the initiative to inquire and learn more about our community, our temple, and the services we provide. Your engagement is deeply valued, and we welcome every opportunity to share accurate information about who we are and what we stand for.

Jatson Choekhorling Community of Carlisle, PA is a Buddhist Dharmic community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha. We warmly welcome individuals and families from all cultural and religious backgrounds both as members and non-members on equal footing. Accordingly, we do not, and under our governing bylaws cannot, represent or identify as a single-culture institution.

For reference, Article 2 (Purpose), Paragraph 5 of our bylaws provides:

"Jatson Choekhorling Community Carlisle, PA is a Bhutanese-American organization with distinct cultural beliefs (i.e., Tamang, Gurung, Magar, Sherpa, and others) that provides services to our community, regularly scheduled services, and an organized assemblage. It encompasses various cultural customs, rituals, ideas, and meditation teachings based on the original teachings attributed to Buddhism to help with mental health issues, yoga classes, clarity of mind, and interpreted philosophies with due respect to other existing religions."

In keeping with this stated purpose, Jatson Choekhorling holds deep respect for all cultural backgrounds and does not solely inherit, embody, or identify with Tamang culture or any other single ethnic identity.

We are inclusive by design. Any characterization, association, or proposed merger that would position our community as the institutional home of one particular cultural or ethnic group is inconsistent with both our identity and our bylaws, and cannot be supported or endorsed by the Board.

We therefore wish to make clear, on behalf of the organization, that Jatson Choekhorling Community of Carlisle, PA is recognized as a unified Buddhist organization that serves all cultures and traditions equally and independently, without affiliation to or representation of any single ethnic identity.

We respectfully ask that all members of the broader community refer to this letter as the official position of Jatson Choekhorling, and refrain from sharing information inconsistent with what is stated herein.

Should anyone have further questions or wish to learn more, the Board welcomes direct outreach so that accurate information may be provided.

Weather reports are showing increasing possibility of a major winter storm this weekend.

Winter Storm Safety: Quick Check

Home and Power
• Charge all cell phones and medical devices now.
• Have flashlights and extra batteries ready.
• Charge portable power banks.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety
• Locate your furnace and dryer vents now so you can find them easily to clear snow during the storm.
• Never use a generator inside or near windows.
• Keep generators at least 20 feet from the house.
• Test CO detectors and move to fresh air if they alarm.

Medical Needs
• Confirm you have a 7 day supply of all prescriptions.
• Check backup oxygen tanks and medical equipment batteries.
• Keep a printed list of medications and allergies for EMS.

Travel and Access
• Stay off the roads to allow emergency vehicles to pass.
• Keep fire hydrants near your home clear of snow.
• Clear a path to your front door for emergency responders.

With a significant snowstorm forecasted, this may be the largest snowfall our area has seen in over a decade! As with all emergencies, preplanning is key. Please review the information below to help keep yourself, your neighbors, and our road crews safe.

• Clear snow and ice away from your home’s gas meter, furnace and dryer vents, and any other exterior exhaust pipes.
• If there is a fire hydrant near your home, please shovel it out so it is visible and accessible in an emergency.
• Charge portable electronics (cell phones, flashlights, emergency radios, battery packs) in case of a power outage.
• Space heaters should only be plugged directly into a wall outlet, never use surge protectors or extension cords.
• When shoveling, clear wide enough paths for safe walking. If able, consider helping elderly or physically impaired neighbors.

• Township snow plows will begin plowing once snowfall reaches approximately 3 inches.
• Main roads and high-priority locations (including the hospital and State Police barracks) are plowed first.
• It generally takes about 6 hours for road crews to cover the entire township once plowing operations begin.
• Please do not shovel or blow snow onto plowed or treated roadways as this creates hazardous conditions.
• Move vehicles off the street to allow plows adequate room to operate. This is especially critical in cul-de-sacs.

• Do not travel during the storm unless absolutely necessary. Staying off the roads helps keep you safe and allows plow crews and emergency responders to do their jobs efficiently.
