đź’™ Yesterday was World Down Syndrome Day. And you showed up.

You wore your socks. You shared our posts. You started conversations. You donated. You took action.

And together — as one global community — we raised our voices for people with Down syndrome and said loudly and clearly:

Loneliness is not acceptable. Exclusion is not acceptable. And we will not stop speaking up until every person with Down syndrome feels valued, connected, and that they belong.

We do not change the world in one day. But days like yesterday matter. Every person who heard our message is one more person who might think differently. Who might reach out to someone who is lonely. Who might make their school, workplace, or community a little more welcoming.

That is how change happens. And it starts with you.

From everyone at Down Syndrome International and the global Down syndrome community — thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. 💛

🧦 Tomorrow is World Down Syndrome Day!🧦

Are your socks ready?

On 21 March, people all over the world will be wearing their boldest, brightest, most mismatched socks for the Lots Of Socks campaign.

But here is the fun part — when someone asks about your socks, you have the perfect opening to talk about something really important.

You could talk about loneliness. How too many people with Down syndrome feel left out, invisible, and disconnected. And how we can all do something about it.

Or you could simply say: today is World Down Syndrome Day. And I am wearing these socks because I stand with the Down syndrome community.

Get your socks ready. Get your message ready. And get ready to make some noise tomorrow. đź’›

In our final post on language for World Down Syndrome Day, we are looking at how we describe people who do not have Down syndrome.

It is common to hear the word "normal" used as a comparison. However, we advocate for using terms like "typically developing" or "typical."

Why avoid the word "normal"?
đź’™Language of Exclusion: If one group is "normal," it suggests that others are "abnormal" or "broken." This creates an "us vs. them" barrier that fuels loneliness.
đź’›Diversity is Typical: In reality, human diversity is completely typical! Having an extra chromosome is simply a different "instruction manual" for the body, not an illness or a deviation from being a valued person.
💙Fostering Belonging: When we stop using "normal" as a benchmark, we move closer to a world where every person—regardless of their genetic makeup—is seen as a standard, valued member of society.

True connection grows when we lead with respect and empathy.

Let’s stand by using language that makes space for everyone to belong. 🤝💙

Governor Josh Shapiro has issued a proclamation declaring March 2026 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!

The proclamation reads, in part, “ whereas individuals with developmental disabilities are an integral part of our society, making meaningful contributions to our communities, workplaces, and culture…we must work together to raise awareness about the barriers faced by individuals with developmental disabilities, as well as the opportunities we must create for growth, inclusion, and empowerment through education, respect, and compassion.”
