SPEED HUMPS could be a major player in for slowing motor vehicle traffic on residential streets.
Speed humps are much less expensive than major infrastructure overhauls, they are highly effective, and they are typically very popular with the residents impacted.
David Zipper's August 5, 2025 article entitled, "All Hail the Humble Speed Hump," (Bloomberg.com) is an excellent read. "In Arlington, Virginia, the installation of speed humps led to a 43% reduction in drivers exceeding 20 miles per hour."
“Speed humps are our bread and butter,” said Cheryl Stacks, the transportation manager of St. Petersburg, Florida, adding that her city installs 30 to 40 per year, all at residents’ request. "They’re cheap, and they work.”
Let's combine speed humps with 20mph speed limits on residential roads. That would significantly improve safety for all road users, encourage more walking and biking, and would have the bonus of reducing noise pollution from motor vehicles (which get louder as speeds increase, due to noises from tires).
Note: speed HUMPS, not speed BUMPS.

These simple, cheap traffic-calming devices are both effective and wildly popular with (most) residents. Here’s why more cities are going all-in on speed humps.
