What to do when youā€™re not starting from scratch.

These pictures are from Jessā€™s suburban lawn->meadow conversion in its fourth fall. The site has lots of volunteers (asters, goldenrods, ferns) and has been diversified with happy-to-spread seed-grown plants like bee balms, foxglove beardtongue, Culverā€™s root, and anise hyssop amidst the existing grasses.

To keep grass at bay, keep it trimmed down a few feet around the plantings, especially as they get established. (I usually do this by hand once or twice a year.) Grass loves to pop up just about everywhere and will seed right into your mulch.

Thank you to our friends at APCAW and the Forest Stewards Guild for inviting us to a great couple of days learning all about collecting seeds from ash treesā€¦

Here in Maine, we are in a *very* special window: 75% of our ash trees are not yet impacted by Emerald Ash Borer - but we have less than two decades before all ash in the state is hit. Now is the time to collect seeds!!

If you want to join a collection day, or if you have ash trees on your land* that volunteers could collect from - email us at info at wildseedproject dot net, and we will connect you with the right resources!
