it’s wishlist wednesday, and unlike dalton, i am worried (iykyk). in addition to mushroom’s extensive treatment, we have had a URI go around our foster room (thankfully everyone is getting over it) but the supportive care to get them healthy has been time consuming & expensive. please consider sending an item off our wishlist to help us through this stressful time.

our most needed items include;

⚫️ french fry containers

⚫️ syringes
⚫️ pellet litter
⚫️ adult cat dry/wet food (pate)

i know a lot of our care & attention has been focused on mushroom, but I wanted to share gizmo’s progress since being rescued. his lacerations have completely healed & he has blossomed into a playful & loving cat. his favorite things so far are eating food & playing with the foster kittens in our cat room. gizmo is FIV +, but can live a long healthy life with other FIV negative (or positive) cats! he is fully vetted & ready to join your family 🏠🐱

baby mushroom was seen at mt laurel animal hospital this past thursday and received multiple emergency medical treatments including a blood transfusion.

head start animal rescue has already raised money towards her care thanks to everyone who cares about community cats & rescued cats, but we still need to continue to raise funds for follow up appointments as well as if she needs another transfusion (which sadly may be necessary given her low red blood cell count after the first transfusion).

while we are no where near on stable ground yet, baby mushroom seems to be responding well to the antibiotic & the transfusion. look at the difference alone in her nose!

mushroom was a product of an unwanted littler at a feral cat colony. she came to head start animal rescue during trapping as an attempt to manage the colony. she was covered with fleas & infested with parasites. without rescue & medical intervention she would have likely not survived kittenhood (only 25% of kittens born outside survive to see 6 months of age).

if you have feral cats outside please get involved with TNR. if you own an indoor/outdoor or outdoor cat that is not fixed, please spay or neuter it! by spaying and neutering your friendly, owned, feral, or community cat you are preventing the unnecessary deaths of kittens. please, I am begging you, become apart of the solution 🙏💗

please make sure you’re following alone to see the progress of mushroom. we are still awaiting lab work that was sent out & if she is making her own red blood cells. please pray for baby mushroom 🍄❤️

mushroom is doing AMAZING after her blood transfusion, although by no means in the clear—she was able to be discharged after her blood transfusion and is now thankfully pink instead of white.

she was seen by two different vets and even they referred to some specialist & their critical care team because her case is so unique. while they originally agreed with our suspicion of FIP, there was no other real symptoms other than slight abdominal fluid & anemia, but despite her anemia she was still alert, eating, drinking, & using the litter box. she was even grooming herself & meowing. given with how well she responded after the transfusion, the Mt. Laurel Animal Hospital team believes she is actually suffering from a blood borne infection & we have begun treatment for that instead. we are treating her both for mycoplasma & bartonellosis.

she is home now & we are still continuing supportive care & round the clock monitoring. if she declines again she will have to go back to mt laurel animal hospital & possibly receive another transfusion & ultrasound to check again for fip. mushroom is doing so much better today & back to her spicy self, & even tried to bite me when I was giving her meds 🫠🥴
