Most of us know someone who has experienced domestic violence, even if we don’t know their story.

Someone who may be experiencing abuse.
Someone who may not be ready to talk about it.
Someone who may not know what support they need.

You don’t need to have all the answers to support someone. Sometimes, letting them know they’re not alone is a place to start. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, The Hotline is available 24/7.

The cycle of violence can be difficult to recognize, especially when abuse is mixed with moments of love, apologies, and promises to change.

Understanding the cycle can help us recognize patterns of abuse, support survivors, and remind them that they are not alone.

Consent is never a one-time decision.

Consent can be given, and consent can be revoked at any time. Someone can change their mind before or during sexual activity, and when they say “no,” “stop,” or otherwise communicate that they no longer want to continue, that choice must be respected. Previous consent does not mean ongoing consent.

Consent also requires the ability to choose. Alcohol and drugs can affect a person's ability to understand what is happening, make decisions, communicate, or control their actions. When someone is incapacitated, they cannot give consent. Being intoxicated is not an invitation, and someone's level of intoxication should never be used to excuse sexual violence.

Sexual activity should always be based on freely given, informed, and ongoing consent.

If something happened to you, it was not your fault. You deserve to be heard, believed, supported, and treated with dignity. Whether you are on campus, off campus, or somewhere in between, help is available. You can reach out to your school's resources, local services, or VOICE. You do not have to navigate what happened alone, and you do not have to know exactly what you want to do next before asking for help.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the connection between abuse and the pets who often suffer alongside survivors and have several ways to get involved.🐾

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲: Donate gently used blankets and towels to the Butler County Humane Society to help pets in need.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿: Support animals leaving abusive homes by becoming a sponsor; your contribution can help provide food, vaccines, and emergency care.

𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Open your home to pets escaping unsafe situations and provide them with temporary love and care.

Every action counts, whether big or small, and together we can protect both survivors and their furry family members.
