The Links, Incorporated is a community service organization of over 17,500+ women with more than 298 chapters. Hawkins and Sarah S. Lancaster. Mrs.

The Links, Incorporated is an organization of over 16,000 women with 292 chapters located in 40 States; the District of Columbia; Nassau, Bahamas; Frankfort, Germany; and South Africa. Members are individual achievers who are making a difference in the communities and lives of African Americans and persons of African descent across the globe. The Links, Incorporated was co-founded by the late Margaret R. Scott in 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter began in 1980 as an interest group organized by the visionary Albertine T. Lancaster selected Elfreda Mathis as the interest group president. After two years of community projects within Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, these dynamic women were installed into The Links, Incorporated with Elfreda Mathis as the chapter’s first president. Past National President, Julia Purnell of the Baton Rouge Chapter; Thelma Hardiman, National Establishment Officer; and Mignon Johnson, Eastern Area Director of the Arlington Chapter presided over the installation ceremony held on May 15, 1982 in Patuxent River, Maryland.

💚 Happy International Day of the Girl! 💚

The Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated proudly joined girls and advocates from around the world in celebrating the International Day of the Girl at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Under the leadership of our International Trends and Services Chair, Kaprece James, and Co-Chair Demaryl Singleton, along with chapter members Patricia Pie and Nicole Cooksey, our chapter traveled with an eight-girl delegation in partnership with Stella's Girls to participate in the official International Day of the Girl celebration hosted by the Working Group on Girls, in collaboration with Canada, Türkiye, Peru, UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women.

More than 400 girls gathered for this powerful global convening to raise their voices, share their experiences, and advocate for a future where every girl can live, learn, lead, and thrive.

This year’s focus on 'Ending Child Marriage' is especially meaningful to our chapter.

For the past six years, our Chapter has supported girls and young people in Liberia and Sierra Leone, investing in education and advocacy as powerful tools to help prevent child marriage and expand opportunities for girls. Through our international service efforts, we have provided school fees, uniforms, educational support, and community-based programming that reaches more than 1,500 girls and youth in local communities.

Our work reminds us that ending child marriage requires more than awareness. It requires sustained investment in girls’ education, leadership, safety, economic opportunity, and the systems that allow them to determine their own futures.

Today, we celebrate girls everywhere—and recommit to ensuring their voices are not only heard, but respected, supported, and acted upon.

When girls are educated, empowered, and given the opportunity to lead, communities and generations are transformed.

Applications are now open for the G.O.L.D. Program — our new initiative under the International Trends and Services (ITS) Facet of the Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated!

The Global Opportunities & Leadership Development (G.O.L.D.) Program is open to middle and high school students across Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties who are interested in leadership, global awareness, Model United Nations, and making an impact in their communities and beyond.

This weekend The Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter held our Chapter Retreat themed “Revive, Reclaim, Reaffirm” filled with friendship, laughter, lots of fun and of course we handled chapter business!

A very special Thank you to our very own Eastern Area Director Dr. Lisa Loury Lomas, for delivering a keynote that reminded us all to Revive, Reclaim, and Reaffirm our love as sisters and for our sisterhood that had everyone in the room seeking Friendships of Virtue.

We ended the retreat with an informative & engaging disaster preparation session provided by Dr. Jamla Rizek. We all learned that it’s important to have a plan in place prior to an emergency and now have the steps to create our own family safety plans. Thank you to Dr. Rizek for visiting with the Southern Maryland Chain Chapter!
