It was named after a prominent community leader in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn, Dr. Joseph B. Cavallaro, an outstanding Catholic layman and American citizen devoting himself to the practice of his Catholic Faith and to the interests of his community. In December 1948, Dr. Cavallaro was appointed as "Knight of the Holy Sepulchre" by His Holiness Pope Pius 12th with approval of His Excellency T

homas E. Molloy, then Bishop of Brooklyn. In September 1952, he was elevated to "Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulchre" by His Holiness Pope Pius 12th with approval of His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman. Dr. Cavallaro passed away on August 22nd, 1957 at the age of 53. As faith would have it, death occurred on his 32nd wedding anniversary leaving behind his wife Linda, sons Joseph, Richard, John, and Peter, and his daughter Loretta. Cavallaro Council are proud to follow his leadership through the Knights of Columbus where we have the opportunity to offer our time and energy to the needs of mankind. Our council donates money to St. A's Baseball program to support the 13-14 Year Olds Grasshopper Division and our members are involved in the Bensonhurst Cluster Youth Ministry that encompasses numerous parishes in our area including St. Athanasius, St. Dominic, St. Mary's, and others.

As the 2025/2026 Columbian year comes to a close, my 7 years as Grand Knight will officially also come to a close. I would like to thank all my fellow officers and members for your support, trust and confidence in the past 7 years to lead our council. We have went through a lot of things in those years, with the Covid pandemic, selling our building, relocating to our new “home” & restructuring on how to do the things that we do. I would not have been able to keep Cavallaro Council continuing to grow & be more active and represented strongly in the Parish, community and District without all of our members help, and for that I thank all of you very much.

I have been a member of this great Order since 1988 and decided to move on to my next endeavor as a Knight of Columbus. I have been asked (multiple times) and I have finally accepted to become a District Deputy. This will be a new adventure for me on the horizon, but do not worry, I will NOT be leaving Joseph B. Cavallaro Council. I will ALWAYS be there for my Cavallaro brother Knights, Columbiettes and this Council.

Please help me welcome Deacon Bill Kelly as he becomes our new Grand Knight on 7/1/2026 leading us into the new Columbian year. Cavallaro will continue to grow & be active under his and our officer’s leadership.
