A peek inside our recent field trip to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) /Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) with our Fordham University Humanitarian Studies class! 🩺✨

Here is what we learned about how MSF operates behind the scenes:

📍 Navigating Access & Impact:
DNDi Collaboration: Exploring how life-saving treatments (beyond vaccines) are developed, tested, and negotiated with pharmaceutical companies to guarantee equitable access.

Medical Programs & Advocacy: Seeing how medical guidance fuels international projects, while the UN representative bridges field realities with global policy.

Communications & Fundraising: Learning how public engagement, press teams, and donor development keep independent humanitarian action alive.

Association Corner: Getting inspired by the global wall map and seeing where field work and advocacy intersect 🗺️

MSF was founded in 1971 by a group of doctors and journalists who believed that treating patients and speaking out (témoignage) are inseparable.

90% of MSF field staff are hired locally in the communities they serve.

HUST students tested their knowledge on these key humanitarian terms during a group activities, asked MSF staff questions and heard from Professor Bernard Wiseman on how these terms are used in the field. We also got to catch up with Lauren Larsen who graduated in 2025 with her BA in humanitarian studies and international political economy (Fordham IPED). Lauren works full time as an association analyst at MSF in Manhattan.

During humanitarian crises, Ensuring accessibility to education matters. Every child deserves the chance to read, write, ask questions, and imagine a future.
Every word opens a possibility.

This month, Fordham University celebrates and .

Literacy in crises means being able to read and write to access information, communication, and continue learning during emergencies such as conflict or displacement. Literacy saves lives. When children are able to read, even during a crisis, their mental health improves, they are able to follow directions, help their families survive, apply for higher education opportunities and jobs, and continue learning into their adult years.

At Fordham’s Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs, students explore the educational challenges facing crisis-affected communities and education in emergencies case studies through courses such as Forced Migration and Humanitarian Action (HUST 4200) and the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance, reinforcing the importance of continued learning during crises.

🎙️ NEW WEBINAR | Key Findings of the CHH-Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict and Displacement

We are honored to feature Chi-Chi Undie, senior associate and technical director within the Population Council’s International Programs Division and regional representative for the organization’s Kenya office. 🇰🇪✨

Undie will present research that focuses primarily on sexual and gender-based violence against women, children and adolescent girls. In this live virtual session, she will present key findings and conclusions from the landmark CHH-Lancet Commission report, calling for urgent, systemic transformation across the global humanitarian system. 📊🌍
