🌱✨ The Family Center hosted Physically Fit. Mentally Strong!, a panel unpacking the intersections of physical and mental wellness in celebration of on Tuesday, 5/19.

This cultivation event brought together Family Center supporters who took in a robust conversation on the ways movement can positively impact emotional well-being, reduce stress and anxiety, and strengthen confidence in people of all ages.

Thank you to TFC Board Member Bryan Roberts for facilitating an insightful discussion with our panelists: Joan Salmon, TFC’s Chief Program Officer of Behavioral Health and Support Services, TFC Board Member Carolynne Perine-Lee, Greg Milnarik of Koomba, and Andrew Zimmerman of Behavior Design Collective! Swipe to hear some of what they had to say.

While Mental Health Awareness Month is quickly wrapping up, help is available at The Family Center year-round. If you or someone you know needs mental health support, email [email protected] or call (718) 230-1379 for more information.

“I am an artist and writer. I am a father to three. But before I was any of those things, I was a 7-year-old kid in need of guidance. I found that guidance and so much more at The Family Center and in the person of Richard Osterweil. It’s been almost 30 years since I received services at The Family Center, but the impact of those services still resonates with me, and my entire family, today.”

In another touching moment at the Spring Soirée, Kevin, a former Family Center mentee, went down memory lane, chronicling his time as a child at TFC. It was during that time that he was matched with Richard, a local NYC artist, The Family Center’s longest-serving board member, and 2026 Founder’s Award recipient.

Today, Kevin credits Richard with not only with his filmmaking career, but for also helping him “see the possibilities in life.” From Broadway shows to camp experiences, to memorable conversations on art, photography, and even manners, Kevin said “during what was a tumultuous childhood, The Family Center and Richard made life seem normal.”

In the almost three decades that have passed since Kevin and Richard first connected, Kevin has continually called back the lessons he learned as a youth, pouring them into his own three children.

This is generational impact! When a child is seen, supported, and guided, the ripple effects live on in the families they build.

“Between May 2017 and September 2025, Family Center attorneys worked on my case to obtain guardianship of my granddaughters. Last year, The Family Center helped me finally secure guardianship of [them]. Today, my granddaughters are bright young ladies with strong futures ahead of them.”

Chamika, a client of The Family Center’s Legal Wellness Institute, took to the stage at the Spring Soirée to bravely open up about her journey to guardianship of her granddaughters. There, she spoke about the long and often difficult road she traveled beginning in May 2017—when she first connected with Family Center attorneys—and the legal advocacy that followed for nearly a decade.
Just last year, Chamika was finally able to secure guardianship of her granddaughters! What had been years of uncertainty gave way to stability, as she could fully step into the role she had been fighting for.

Chamika’s story is a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact of legal advocacy. Dedicated support, as was offered by the Legal Wellness Institute, can indeed create paths to healing, stability, and a fulfilling future for our clients.
We are so honored that Chamika trusted The Family Center.

Last Wednesday, Family Center staff celebrated Denim Day, a powerful tradition observed every April, which is .

By wearing denim, we not only stood in solidarity with those impacted by sexual assault, but we also joined global movement to raise awareness around this issue, and to challenge harmful misconceptions.

The Family Center is a trauma-informed agency, committed to fostering safety and trust in the work we do and in the community overall.
