Looking for volunteer hours or plain ole exercise? Look no further because we have a great opportunity for you. We received grant funding from the Land Trust Alliance (thank you!) to help with a couple trail projects and the deadline to get the work done is coming up. We appreciate any and all help!

Thank you to the folks who came out to an early Sunday morning bird walk at the Red Cedar Run Nature Preserve in Fowlerville, with the youngest birder just shy of 4 years old! We heard 25+ species within a half hour or so, and along with our year round residents like cardinals and chickadees, we heard and saw many migrants, a few being the Willow Flycatcher, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Indigo Bunting.

The Preserve is small - 12 acres - but it is filled with native shrub thickets that many birds are attracted to for nesting. And it has one of the oldest man-made drains in the County (1800s) providing a water source. Due to the extensive agricultural landscape of Conway Township, this preserve is a bit of an oasis for birds - we are very happy to protect it for them.

Join us on our birding trail at the Red Cedar Run Nature Preserve in Fowlerville on May 17th to see what songbirds might be migrating through or even sticking around to nest. Among lots of our more common birds, last week we heard the Baltimore Oriole and the Northern Yellow Warbler. So by May 17th, we hope to hear other warblers and migrants in the area. (The trail is level and a short loop - over 1/3 of a mile - through native shrub thickets, silver maple grove, and a grassy area along a historic drain feature.)

For planning purposes, please RSVP to [email protected]. Hope to see you then!

It was a nice day to man a booth at the Crossroads Group Sierra Club- sponsored Earth Day event at the AMP in Brighton. We appreciated sharing our booth with Molly, the coordinator of the GiLLS CISMA, so we were able to engage the public on all sorts of conservation topics.
