We recently brought together our Connect-Us UConn Eldh Scholars for a special gathering connecting students at every stage of their college journeys, from incoming freshmen to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and alumni. The goal was to give our newest college students the chance to learn directly from those who have already navigated the transition, and create space for everyone to share what they’ve learned along the way.

For many of our Scholars, who are the first in their families to attend college, having a community to turn to for advice, encouragement, and honest conversation can make all the difference. Here is some of the wisdom they shared:

➡️ Use the resources available to you. Take advantage of tutors, learn your professors’ office hours, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
➡️ Sit up front and get to know your professors. Especially in a large class, making yourself visible can go a long way.
➡️ Find your community. Make friends, join clubs, or even start one yourself. Having people and activities you love becomes especially important during those cold Connecticut winters!
➡️ Get involved beyond the classroom. Look into campus jobs, becoming an ambassador or tour guide, and other opportunities to become part of university life.
➡️ Explore what’s possible. From study abroad programs to organizations you never knew existed, college is a chance to try something new.

What made the gathering so meaningful wasn’t just the advice, it was seeing our Scholars become resources for one another. The students who once entered college with questions of their own are now able to turn around and help the next group take that first step with a little more confidence.

Congratulations on a great job of community organizing this summer. Your outreach to potential new participants for all of our programs was excellent. You walked the streets of Bridgeport, you made phone calls. We have already received a host of applications. Congratulations once again on developing into young leaders.

"Our partners generously give their time and energy, and our students feel that. They recognize how seriously they are taken, how thoughtfully each workshop is prepared, and how much these adults care about their growth. It becomes a powerful exchange that leaves a lasting impact on everyone involved."
