It was a pretty good day. Another two houses built, primarily in our factory, set on their foundations so we can sell them to families who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to own a home. To support this work, visit www.flatironshabitat.org/donate

A major opportunity to invest in housing is headed to Broomfield voters.

On Tuesday night, the Broomfield City Council voted to place a measure on the November ballot that would increase the lodging tax paid primarily by visitors staying in local hotels and short-term rentals from 1.6% to 6%.

Even with the increase, Broomfield would continue to have the lowest lodging tax rate among the surrounding communities shown in the accompanying graph.

If approved, the measure is expected to generate approximately $2.4 million in new annual revenue. Those funds would be entrusted to the Broomfield Housing Alliance to preserve and expand housing opportunities for Broomfield residents.

The measure would not increase property taxes, the general sales tax, or the cost of purchases made at local businesses. It would create a sustained, locally controlled source of funding to address one of Broomfield’s most urgent challenges.

Flatirons Habitat for Humanity strongly supports this measure. We look forward to working alongside the Broomfield Housing Alliance and other community partners to help secure a win for housing in November.

More details will be coming soon. For now, we are celebrating an important first step and getting ready for the work ahead.

Big ideas are even better when you can walk through them wearing a hard hat.

On July 22, we welcomed Mike Sangaline, Senior Advisor with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Innovation, Affordability, and Consumer Choice, and members of the National Laboratory of the Rockies team to the BoulderMOD factory.

The laboratory has been an invaluable technical partner, helping us strengthen our home designs, improve energy efficiency, and explore solar and other technologies that make homes more affordable to own and operate. The visit gave us an opportunity to show how that expertise is taking shape on the factory floor, where affordable homeownership, innovation, workforce education, volunteers, and a lot of sawdust all come together.

We are grateful to Mike and our partners at the National Laboratory of the Rockies for spending time with us and for helping BoulderMOD build smarter, more efficient homes for local families.

Project Children is an organization that’s brought tens of thousands of young people from Northern Ireland to the U.S. to stay with host families. One Project Children host family is located in Broomfield, Colorado. And they’ve been partnering with Flatirons Habitat for Humanity to provide the visiting students with internships, building affordable housing for Boulder County.

Walls raised. Spirits lifted. Love celebrated.

Our past Saturday was spent doing what we do best: bringing people together to build homes, community, and hope at Flatirons Habitat for Humanity's PRIDE Build!

We had a great turnout of passionate volunteers at the BoulderMOD factory, all dedicated to a shared vision: a world where everyone has a decent, affordable place to live.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers for showing up boldly, fundraising generously, and putting sweat equity into a future home for a local family. You proved once again that when our community builds together, we thrive together.

We join housing advocates across the country in celebrating this important step toward addressing our nation’s housing affordability crisis.

This bipartisan legislation represents the first major federal housing initiative in approximately 30 years. We are proud to have added our voice to the collective advocacy that helped move it across the finish line.

Last Thursday, we gathered at the Ponderosa Mobile Home Community for a Habitat Home Dedication for 13 homes! "A home isn't defined by the day you receive the keys. It's the life you build inside it, the meals shared, the children growing up, the holidays celebrated, and the peace that comes from having a place to call your own." - Dan McColley, Executive Director, FHfH

Thank you to the City of Boulder Colorado Government and Boulder Valley School District for their partnership and shared vision in helping make affordable homeownership, educational opportunities, and a stronger future possible for homeowners in our community.
