The Boston University “Goodwill, Not Landfill” team faced a recurring challenge after student move‑out: thousands of pounds of good-quality bedding left behind that Goodwill couldn’t accept due to sanitary concerns. In response, Maria Gorret Nampiima, a graduate student in the BU School of Theology’s Faith and Ecological Justice program, with support from BU Zero Waste Manager Sarah Healey and a cross-campus team of invested faculty and staff, launched a volunteer-powered effort to launder, sterilize, and redistribute the bedding directly to local people who needed it most.

In this episode, Maria and Sarah join Gretchen and Waneta to share how the project began, how it’s expanding, and how the intersection of sustainability and social justice provides the foundation for its success.

Do you know an individual, organization, or business making a meaningful impact in waste prevention? We invite you to submit a nomination for this year's MassRecycle Awards.

These awards recognize outstanding efforts to reduce waste through source reduction, reuse, repair, food waste prevention, innovative programs, education, and other initiatives that help conserve resources and protect the environment.
If you know someone whose work deserves recognition, please nominate them!

Your nomination helps celebrate leadership, inspire others, and highlight successful waste prevention efforts in our community.

🏆 Individual – Presented to an individual who deserves special recognition for leadership, sharing knowledge with others, or other accomplishments.

🏆 Youth– Presented to a middle or high school student, or student group, whose creativity and commitment have made a real impact in recycling, reuse, or waste reduction in their community.

🏆 Volunteer – Presented to an individual for contributing to recycling, reuse and/or waste reduction in a volunteer capacity.

🏆 Municipal – Presented to a municipality that has demonstrated innovation, leadership, and/or has overcome political obstacles to advance programs.

🏆 Small Transfer Station – Presented to a transfer station open 3 days a week or fewer.

🏆 Institution - Presented to an organization or one of its employees.

🏆 College or University – Presented to the school, an employee, or student.

🏆Business – Presented to a traditional business that has developed and operates an outstanding program.

🏆Public Servant – Presented to a politician or government official that has demonstrated great leadership or personal commitment to sustainable programming.

“Tackling” Waste Diversion for Athletics Events
Williams College
July 15, 2026, 10 am to 2 pm

Join the MassRecycle Campus Collaborative in the Berkshires at our summer workshop at Williams College!

We’ll kick things off with presentations focusing on waste diversion strategies at both small and large athletics events and we’ll carve out time to share your successes and solicit feedback on challenges that your institution experiences at athletic events. In the afternoon, we’ll walk around the campus and hear from both Williams’ Communications Office about their process for revamping the college’s waste signage and the college’s local compost hauler about successes and challenges with compost collection.

Thank you to Rand-Whitney for hosting a MassRecycle tour at their state-of-the-art Boylston packaging facility on June 18!

Tour participants enjoyed a presentation about Rand-Whitney’s history and current operations in facilities across the country, focused on the company’s dedication to sustainability. Rand-Whitney maintains multiple certifications for its sustainable practices and holds itself to the highest standards.

This facility, opened only 3 years ago, uses close to 100% recycled feedstock to produce corrugated boxes and packaging for a variety of clients. Visitors saw not only how the packaging is produced from start to finish, but how the facility recycles water, cardboard scraps, and even cardboard dust collected and processed by a dedicated ventilation system.

The MRF sorts and recycles materials such as paper, cardboard, and plastics for reuse in new products — helping conserve our natural resources for future generations.

Do you suffer from “Extreme Litter Awareness”? Neil Rhein does, and he has turned that constant noticing into a statewide mission. As the founder and executive director of Keep Massachusetts Beautiful (KMB), Neil joins Gretchen and Waneta to talk about the litter he cannot help but see in public spaces across the Commonwealth and how KMB is working to address it. Through town‑wide cleanups and youth education programs, KMB is inspiring the kind of behavior change that builds lifelong environmental stewardship.

Community action is powerful, but it cannot stand alone. Neil explains why legislative support and partnership between volunteers and local governments are essential to keeping Massachusetts litter‑free without putting extra strain on municipal budgets. He also highlights Senate Resolve 2390, now before the Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee, which would create a statewide Litter Prevention and Cleanup Task Force. Neil shares what this initiative could accomplish and how listeners can help move it forward before the legislative session ends on July 31.

Thank you to Conigliaro Industries for hosting a MassRecycle tour (our largest yet!) at their Framingham facility on May 21!

Participants got an inside look at how Conigliaro tackles a wide range of hard‑to‑recycle and specialty material, from extruded polystyrene and rigid plastics to PPE and countertop remnants. Guests also saw circularity in action as processed materials were transformed on‑site into new products. At every stage, the Conigliaro team showcased creative, practical approaches to recovering and reusing materials that fall outside traditional recycling streams.

Tour participant Heather Billings of CET shared her impressions: "I was impressed by their ingenuity in finding new ways to recycle and reuse materials. From concrete ‘LEGO’ blocks made with reclaimed rubble, glass, and plastic to shredding, sorting, and baling systems that give so many items a second life, their engineers and staff are making a real difference. And they do it with hard work and a witty sense of humor.”
