The Policy Center For Maternal Mental Health's recent 2026 Maternla Mental Health State Report Cards demonstrate that although progress is being made in mental health care during and after pregnancy, there is much work to be done.

The overall U.S. grade improved slightly from a C- to a C, but no states received A grades.

We are thrilled to see that the report card considers whether a state provides enhanced Medicaid reimbursement or state investment in group prenatal and group parenting programs.

Currently, 10 states provide enhanced Medicaid reimbursement for prenatal group care. CHI continues to advocate for states to implement this reimbursement policy and provide grant funding to support the implementation and sustainability of Centering group care so that more expectant and current parents access the transformative care experiences Centering provides.

Centering is growing in Texas, with more than 30 licensed Centering sites and a recent event helped continue to build that momentum.

Last month, HOPE Clinic Bellaire hosted the 3rd annual Texas Centering Consortium, led by Texas Advisor Denise Horton.

The event brought together representatives from local clinics and community partners for a day of connection, shared learning and Centering-focused discussion.

Participants heard from one another about how Centering is being implemented across different practice settings and attendees shared in feedback how they appreciated the opportunity to learn directly from other clinics, exchange ideas and better understand how teams are bringing Centering to life in their own communities.

What happens when future health communicators spend time listening to care teams, participants and the stories behind the data?

They help bring the power of CenteringPregnancy® to life.

We are excited to celebrate Cone Health’s CenteringPregnancy program and the Elon University health communications students who spent the spring semester developing strategic communications campaigns to support enrollment, retention and awareness of group prenatal care.

Through this partnership, students worked alongside Cone Health providers, attended the North Carolina and Virginia Centering Consortium and created campaign recommendations designed to help more expectant parents understand what Centering can offer: care, connection, shared learning and support throughout pregnancy.

This is what meaningful partnership looks like — students applying their skills in a real-world setting, care teams sharing their expertise and communities working together to strengthen access to relationship-centered care.

Congratulations to Cone Health, Elon University, Dr. Kim Newton, Virginia Smith, Professor Julie Lellis and all of the students involved in this inspiring project.

Last month CHI's Manager of Health Policy Disha Patel had the opportunity to testify to the Michigan House Insurance Committee about the need for the Michigan House to pass two legislative bills that would support the sustainability of prenatal group care.

The legislation would make Michigan the first state in the nation to require commercial health insurers operating in the state to provide enhanced reimbursement for group prenatal care.

Passing the legislation would improve patient access to CenteringPregnancy®, which has been found to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.

Across the country, many communities face barriers to accessing maternity care, from transportation and scheduling challenges to limited provider availability and smaller patient populations that can make group care models harder to sustain.

Join Centering Healthcare Institute for Centering in Focus: Addressing Maternal Health Deserts, a 90-minute webinar exploring practical strategies for expanding access to Centering where it is needed most.

Topics will include continuous enrollment, mobile clinics and funding opportunities through the Rural Health Transformation Fund. You will also hear directly from Centering sites, including Saban Community Clinic in California and UAMS in Arkansas, about how they are using adaptable approaches to support care rooted in their communities.
