Today we remember the 1,200 innocent lives murdered in cold blood when Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other armed groups and individuals attacked Israeli kibbutzim and the Nova music festival. Men, women, and children were indiscriminately targeted, while victims endured murder, r**e, torture, sexual violence, and bodily mutilation. Among those targeted were Holocaust survivors—people who had already survived the worst antisemitic persecution in history, only to face unimaginable brutality once again. It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. We told them we’d never forget, but as the massacre unfolded people rallied in the streets against the victims, even in western cities. Since then, antisemitic acts have skyrocketed.
Some deny the extent of the atrocities, just like the Holocaust, despite the fact that those who carried out these acts filmed themselves with glee. In one phone call home, a Hamas operative bragged to his family about killing Jews with his bare hands. Not “zionists.” Not “Israelis.” Jews.
We remember the survivors, including the hostages who weren’t able to make it home, and the families who continue to live with the effects of that day. We remember their names, we honor their lives, and we will never forget October 7. May their memories be a blessing.
