FAU Opera Theatre | Est. 1966
Producing full shows & concerts of opera, operetta, zarzuela, and musical theatre at Florida Atlantic, with opportunities for performance, collaboration, and international study. FAU Opera Theatre, a distinguished group of Florida Atlantic University since 1967, represents a blend of academic instruction and real-world performance experience. Primarily concentrating on solo vocal performance, Opera Workshop participants delve into operatic repertoire with direct guidance from our faculty. Beyond developing basic vocal expression, students receive training in fundamental acting, stage movement, and dramatic portrayal. The students are featured in a public performances each semester, from selected opera, operetta, and musical theatre scenes to full productions. Collaboration sits at the heart of FAU Opera Theatre, with students uniting with directors, conductors, dancers, pianists, and their peers, fostering an environment of shared growth. Furthermore, our connections with the local, national, and international operatic communities enable us to frequently organize master classes and workshops with esteemed guest artists and instructors, providing our students with unique insights and educational experiences.

Another milestone for Guglielmi: Amalia e Carlo (Live)!

We are pleased to share that Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre’s world-premiere recording has received the 2026 LIT Music Awards Platinum Award for Best Opera Album.

What makes this recognition especially meaningful is the story behind the music.

Rediscovered in Tuscany in 2021 by musicologist Barbara Salani, PhD, Pietro Carlo Guglielmi’s 1812 opera returned to the stage more than two centuries later through a collaboration between Florida Atlantic University and the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini La Spezia, under the baton of Giovanni Di Stefano.

Today, that once-forgotten work is reaching new audiences around the world.

As international recognition for this recording continues to grow, we remain especially proud of the students, musicians, scholars, and artists who helped give this opera a new life.

We are excited to share some wonderful news from Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre.

“Guglielmi: Amalia e Carlo (Live)” has received two official nominations from the European International Music Awards® for the Summer 2026 Session:

• Best Opera Album
• Best Opera Live Performance

This project is a true international collaboration between Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre and the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini La Spezia, bringing together students, faculty, professional artists, and musicians to rediscover a remarkable historic opera.

We are especially proud of our students and of the work they contributed to this performance and recording. Opportunities like this allow them to learn through real artistic collaboration, build relationships across cultures, and take part in projects that continue well beyond the stage.

Our sincere thanks to Maestro Giovanni Di Stefano, our colleagues at the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini, the Orchestra of the Conservatorio, the Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre Chorus, and all of the artists who helped bring “Amalia e Carlo” back to life.

Florida Atlantic University’s newly revised B.M. and M.M. programs in Vocal Performance offer comprehensive training in voice, opera, languages, lyric diction, vocal pedagogy, musicianship, and performance.

Students study Italian, French, German, and English diction and language; vocal pedagogy; opera and art song; and applied voice, with undergraduate training also including Alexander Technique. Singers perform leading and supporting roles with Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre, and multiple students have successfully auditioned to perform with professional opera companies throughout South Florida.

Through FAU Opera in Italy, students can also study and perform in Italy for academic credit, combining vocal training, Italian language and diction, performance, and cultural immersion.

For musicians pursuing advanced interdisciplinary scholarship, Florida Atlantic also offers the Ph.D. in Comparative Studies, with opportunities for research involving music, performance, aesthetics, theatre, and culture.

Great news! Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre’s production of Pietro Carlo Guglielmi’s Amalia e Carlo has received two Global Music Awards for Outstanding Achievement, one in Opera and one in Classical Music.

The historic revival grew directly from the doctoral dissertation research of Barbara Salani, PhD, at Florida Atlantic University. Developed under the artistic direction of Mitchell Hutchings, DMA, director of Florida Atlantic University Opera Theatre, and conducted by Maestro Giovanni Di Stefano, the production brought an opera that had not been heard in more than 200 years back to the stage.

The project was made possible through an international collaboration with our Italian colleagues at the Conservatorio di Musica “Giacomo Puccini” in La Spezia. Artists and educators from both institutions brought together students, faculty, and professional musicians to transform scholarly research into a fully staged international production.

This recognition celebrates the artistic and scholarly achievement of the production, as well as the strength of the partnership between Florida Atlantic University and the Conservatorio di Musica “Giacomo Puccini” La Spezia.

Congratulations to Mitchell Hutchings, DMA; Maestro Giovanni Di Stefano; Barbara Salani, PhD; and the singers, instrumentalists, faculty, staff, and institutional partners in Florida and Italy whose research, artistry, and collaboration made this historic revival possible.

Florida Atlantic University has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with TAI Escuela Universitaria de Artes in Madrid, Spain, creating a framework for future academic and artistic collaboration between the two institutions.

The five-year agreement, finalized in spring 2026, outlines possible areas of cooperation in student and faculty mobility, joint performances, masterclasses, workshops, guest lectures, research, symposia, artistic innovation, and short-term study abroad experiences. The agreement is coordinated through existing FAU Opera Theatre programming, with a particular focus on Music Performance, Recording Arts, Production, Opera, and Lyric Theatre.

The initiative was developed by Dr. Mitchell Hutchings, Associate Professor of Music and Director of FAU Opera Theatre, as part of his ongoing work in international opera education, vocal performance, and interdisciplinary artistic collaboration.

“TAI offers the kind of environment that today’s arts students need to experience,” Hutchings said. “Opera and vocal performance are increasingly connected to recording, media, production, technology, design, and entrepreneurship. This partnership gives FAU a way to think more broadly about how we prepare students for the realities of creative work today.”

Located in Madrid, TAI offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Music, Performing Arts, Film, Audiovisual Production, Design, Photography, and Visual Arts. This interdisciplinary approach makes the institution a strategic partner for FAU programs that already cross traditional boundaries among performance, media, production, and technology.

For FAU students and faculty, the agreement creates opportunities for collaboration across multiple areas of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

Key collaborators at TAI included Federico Baixeras Llano, Director of Institutional Affairs; Eva Marciel, Director of Institutional Relations and Carlos Benítez, Institutional Partnerships Coordinator. Their work helped move the relationship from its initial conversations to a formal institutional framework.

FAU Opera Theatre is proud to welcome internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Dilan Şaka for a special FAU Opera in Italy masterclass tomorrow in La Spezia, Italy.

As part of our 2026 study abroad program, FAU voice students will have the opportunity to work with Dilan Şaka on opera performance, vocal artistry, language, style, and professional preparation.

This guest artist masterclass reflects the mission of FAU Opera Theatre and Florida Atlantic University to connect students with world-class artists, international training opportunities, and meaningful cultural exchange.
