We are getting close to opening day at the Berlin Fair Historical Museum Barn. New displays this year celebrate Berlin & America’s 250th, the Yankee Peddler, our Old Downtown of the 50s- 60s, and more spirits of Berlin in the tavern area.

After Hudson Street was repaved this month, I remembered we had these old pictures - one from 1923, the other probably earlier. Both show it was a steep dirt road. The view is headed up hill to Worthington Ridge. The original photos belong to Berlin Free Library.

Programs and events coming up in September as we continue to celebrate America 250. For programs held at Berlin Peck Library, you can register with the library to be given a Zoom link if you cannot attend in person. Those programs are then posted on the library's Youtube site. If you missed the Berlin Farms program held at the library a few months ago, look for it on You Tube.

Of course, the major event is at the Berlin Fair where every year we create new displays and experiences in the Historical Museum Barn. It's also our major fundraiser. Be sure to shop in our Country Store for Berlin themed merchandise, and for member made baked goods and confections. Yes, we will have more cowbells!

Worth seeing is Connecticut Museum of History and Culture’s America 250 inspired display, REBELLIOUS. It highlights stories of gutsy Connecticut people throughout our 250 years. Prudence Punderson’s story has Berlin ties. CTMCH uses it to address the issue of how much division there was between those loyal to England and those rebelling. Her father was a well respected merchant in SE Connecticut, but eventually had to flee to Long Island while his wife and daughters were left to run the store. They, too, wound up escaping for their lives. The ensuing story could be a made into a riveting movie! Life across The Sound was full of hardship, separation from family, narrow escape from the Continental Army, and not knowing if she would ever be reunited with Timothy Rossiter. He had joined the Patriot side. Not to spoil the ending if it does become a movie, but she makes her way back to CT, and reconnects with Timothy. They marry and move to Berlin where he practiced medicine. We don’t know where exactly they lived, but she is buried in Maple Cemetery on Worthington Ridge. Sadly, a month after her daughter, Sophia, was born, Prudence died. She is remembered for her exquisite embroideries, including the one owned by CTMCH.
