The Scout motto is Be Prepared, but what does that actually look like?
During meetings, scouts plan for upcoming trips. Adult leaders show them HOW to plan, but the scouts are responsible for DOING the planning. Scouts decide what we do on each trip, what they will eat, who will bring the food, and who is driving and tenting with whom. They look at the weather and what activities are available at each location. They decide what rank requirements or merit badge requirements need to be met on each trip. Each scout fills out their own trip planning sheet to bring home because the Scout is responsible for being the main point of communication with their parents. (Don’t worry… adult leaders provide backup! We recognize that not every scout is great at this.)
Do they have questions? Yes!
This week’s questions:
Q: Is it safe to have grilled chicken for dinner?
A: Sure. We have a meat thermometer in the patrol box and the adults are happy to confirm that it’s cooked through.
Q: Which adults are driving?
A: Ms. Brittany and Mr. Zack are definitely driving.
Q: Which scouts are going?
A: Send a group text to get confirmations from everyone.
Q: What time should we return?
A: It depends on what you want to do Sunday morning.
Q: How many miles should we hike?
A: You could assign a scout to review the trails ahead of time and bring their suggestions for everyone to decide.
This trip plan was prepared by two 12 year olds and a 17 year old. These are our future leaders building honing their skills one trip at a time.
