One hundred and thirty-six years ago, on April 24th, 1890, 63 women from 17 states across the country formally adopted the constitution of the newly-formed General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Their commitment to each other paved the way for the immeasurable impact clubwomen have had on the world. Today, we celebrate the founding of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the incredible members who dedicate their lives to serving others.

On January 10, 1917, women began to line up in front of the White House gates, carrying banners with slogans like, "Mr. President, How Long Must Women Wait for Liberty?"

After trying numerous strategies to secure women's right to vote, suffragists had the radical idea to protest right outside of the White House, where they couldn’t be ignored.

The protests were carefully coordinated, with nearly 2,000 suffragists arriving from across the country to join the picket lines. African American activist Mary Church Terrell and her daughter, Phyllis, joined the picketers, despite having been previously snubbed by white movement leaders.

For months, suffragists took shifts standing outside with provocative banners, facing all kinds of weather, harassment, and even arrest.

The year 2025 is a pivotal moment as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This document is the most widely endorsed blueprint for women’s and girls’ rights worldwide that transformed the women’s rights agenda in terms of legal protection, access to services, youth engagement, and change in social norms, stereotypes and ideas stuck in the past. Before 1995, only 12 countries had legal sanctions against domestic violence. Today, there are 1,583 legislative measures in place across 193 countries, including 354 targeting domestic violence specifically.

The purpose of the day is to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilize all people to do their part.
