Berkley Choir Boosters 2026 Senior Scholarship Winners

BCB awards a $500 scholarship annually to honor the memory of Mary Myers, a charter member of the Berkley Choir Boosters Board of Directors. Mary, a longtime resident of the Berkley School District, gave generously of her time to the Berkley High School choir program and its students and energized her fellow volunteers with her enthusiastic spirit. The 2026 Mary Myers scholarship is awarded to Encore! member Alise Herron, a student who exemplifies this same positive energy and dedication to her choir community. Ms. Noble shared that, “Alise is, at her core, an extremely sensitive and empathetic soul. She forms strong bonds with her peers and is kindness personified. Encore! has benefited from the care she gives not only her music, but also her community.” Congratulations, Alise!

In addition, the Choir Boosters provides the $300 Enduring Voice scholarship to a graduating senior who has overcome adversity during their high school years. A Ca****la member Lucy O’Dell was selected as this year’s recipient. Ms. Smith shared that despite Lucy being very talented and committed, in previous years, she shied away from the limelight. “This year, Lucy challenged herself to sing a solo at both district and state choral festival. Despite being very nervous, she overcame her stage fright and stunned our audiences with her voice.” Congratulations, Lucy!

The BHS Choir Banquet is TUESDAY! On 6/2, please join us to celebrate a wonderful year of vocal music, our graduating seniors, scholarship winners, and some awards. It’s once again a dessert potluck and sure to be a lovely (and tasty) time! Please RSVP via the link in comments as soon as possible, but since we’re late to get this out, it’s definitely not a firm deadline. Hope to see you there!

This year’s final BHS Choir concert was a very special one! Last night, all four choirs performed their traditional repertoire and then took part in a special presentation with actor/producer/singer Jonathan Kirkland. Mr. Kirkland, who played George Washington in Hamilton, is part of the LEAP Grant team. The “In-Toon: Democracy Has Its Eyes On You” grant is funded by the US Government to give opportunity for young people to engage in dialogue about history, civic duty, and democracy through the lens of Hamilton. Berkley is one of six Metro Detroit high schools to participate, along with two schools in Los Angeles. The choirs did a wonderful job performing “Helpless,” “Right Hand Man,” and “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” from Hamilton. Thank you, Jonathan Kirkland, for working with our students and inspiring them, and for sharing your talents with the audience! It was a great and energizing evening…and hopefully the last concert we’ll have in the gym. Hope to see our community at next fall’s BHS concert in the beautiful new Performing Arts Center!
