Looking for a summer volunteer activity that you can do whenever and wherever you like?

Mittens for Detroit has a great opportunity for those who like to sew and make a difference! Our Hands to Hearts Buddies project is gives us a way to engage you in helping to repurpose the way-too-many stretchy dollar store gloves that we receive every year. (We have more than 22,000 pairs of these stretchy, thin gloves in our office right now!)

While many of those pairs make it to be included in Bonus Boxes for the schools, the rest are inappropriate for our cold winters in Detroit. The bears will be sold on an Etsy site and the funds raised will be used to purchase new, warm, durable mittens and gloves for kids in Detroit this winter.

This charming repurposing of the gloves into small cuddly bears is our new summer (and beyond) volunteer activity. Read all about it in the image below. We are scheduling group volunteer activities at our office in August. Individuals can join us for Zoom sewing bees... or bears!

Very little experience is needed for this... and folks who don't sew can still help tremendously in the process! We'd love to have you join us. LAUGH WITH A PURPOSE... while you warm the hands and hearts of Detroiters!

Lucky us! Robyn Gilleran will be our emcee at our 10th Giggles and Gloves on May 17th at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak (free parking!)! This comedy fundraiser will put new, warm, durable gloves on kids, teens, and adults in need in Detroit next Winter.

Robyn Gilleran is a comedian based in Detroit and is the better (looking) half of Hard G Comedy with her husband Jason. This former fat kid and current actor/model is the mother of teenage boys and has a lot to say about growing up, motherhood and life in general. Robyn has performed on stages across the US including Zanies Chicago, Jimmy Kimmel's in Vegas, Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle, One Night Stan's Comedy Club, Traverse City Comedy Club and Funny Farm, as well as Gildas Laughfest, The Traverse City Comedy Fest, the Stand U.P. Comedy Festival and the Detroit Women in Comedy Festival. She's sure to catch you off guard and teach you to never judge a book by her cover.

GET READY TO LAUGH WITH A PURPOSE!

We are so excited to have Andrew Yang as our Feature comic at our 10th Giggles and Gloves on May 17th at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak (free parking!)! This comedy fundraiser will put new, warm, durable gloves on kids, teens, and adults in need in Detroit next Winter.

Andrew Yang is a Michigan comic who has been a featured performer at festivals across the country including Sketchfest in San Francisco, Let’s Fest in Indianapolis, and many others (no, not that one he was rejected from there). He has been fortunate enough to work with a few of his comedy heroes including Beth Stelling, Joel Kim Booster, the Sklar Brothers, and one time had lunch with Maria Bamford. He has also been featured on NPR and was a Best of Fest winner for the Big Pine Comedy Festival. When he’s not on stage, Andrew is probably cooking dinner for his wife and daughter to make up for all the jokes he's written at their expense.

LOOK WHO'S HEADLINING MITTENS FOR DETROIT'S 10th GIGGLES AND GLOVES! 🎤

TAM WHITE is stand-up comic and improv actor from Detroit. She’s currently a resident cast member at Go Comedy Improv Theatre in Ferndale. Her improv experience also includes graduating Second City Conservatory Program and performing in the MainStage cast of ComedySportz Detroit. Tam’s the creator/producer/host of the improv game shows “Hip-Prov” and “Soul Pro”, which play monthly at Planet Ant Theatre and One Night Stan’s Comedy Club, and other stage appearances including Toledo Funny Bone Comedy Club and Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle. During the pandemic, Tam became a board member of the Detroit Women of Comedy Festival and was mentioned in Hour Detroit Magazine as one of Mark Ridley’s favorite local comics. She also teaches corporate improv training, “Rhyming in Improv” workshops and produce fundraisers to benefit the Detroit Creativity Project.

IT'S NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH... and Mittens for Detroit loves our volunteers!

Now that our 16th Season of Warmth is completed, we have been having fun looking at our volunteer engagement stats. Last week we posted our overview of the 54 16th Season Big Sort events. Today we decided to see just what the volunteer hours look like per Big Sort event, companies, and organizations. As you can see, Ally Financial donated the most volunteer hours.... a whopping 238 hours! And in Michigan a volunteer's time is valued at $33.74/hour. AND in case you are wondering, we had 771 volunteer hours over the season, so that would be $26,013.54! Crazy!!!!! At Mittens for Detroit, a volunteer's time is priceless. Thank you to the nearly 350 volunteers who made sure that kids, teens, and adults would have warm hands and hearts in Detroit!

HOORAY FOR VOLUNTEERS!

It's National Volunteers Month, and we are SO grateful for the hundreds of volunteers we who participate in The Big Sort events every year. There is no way we could do our work without the amazing, creative, and fun volunteers in our bargain basement office in the First National Building!

Thank you thank you thank you, volunteers! The numbers this year would have been a lot higher... but Mother Nature decided to mess with us. Seven Big Sorts events had to be cancelled because of the school and office closing during our crazy cold December and January. Still, these number are pretty darn impressive! Take a look at this!!! MFD❤Volunteers!
