School bells are ringing all over Michigan, and kids are back in class! You can help the kiddos be ready to learn and thrive this winter with your donation today and gift of warmth.

New shoes, new jeans, new hoodies, new backpack... that's how some kids start the new school year. Unfortunately, not all kids are able to be outfit with new gear every year. And kids who go to school in the late fall and winter without mittens and gloves on their hands arrive with cold hands. They can't turn book pages, make beautiful art, type on keyboards, play an instrument, or have fun on the playground on recess. When you donate to Mittens for Detroit you'll help provide new, warm, durable pairs to students, and you change the picture completely!

It's so easy. We ask you to help us build up the supply of mittens and gloves that we lost in our flood in June. We ask you to make a donation to help Mitty save his mittens and gloves. We ask you to be part of the solution and make a change in the lives of Detroit students. Can you help us raise funds this week especially to get these pairs purchased in our office by the end of September so we can get them to the schools and onto kids' hands when the early mornings get cold in October?

We hope you will! Your generosity today will make a world of difference to the kids' success this school year. Thank you in advance for caring about Detroit's youngest citizens. THANK YOU!

We are proud to partner with the Council of Jewish Women, Michigan by providing new mittens and gloves for their Back 2 School program! This is our 13th year of partnership. Read all about this great program in the article!

A bittersweet note… The pairs you see in the photo were among the last pairs picked up 6/22, just days before our flood on 6/26. So many pairs like these were lost in the flood.

ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE?
It's time for you to take the Rocket Community Challenge and help Mittens for Detroit rebuild its inventory after our flood!

We are so excited to be in our 11th Rocket Community Challenge! This is an annual friendly competition where our amazing Detroit-area nonprofits can engage folks to help them raise money for their programs. Whether you work for Rocket or not, you're welcome to join this challenge! It starts on Monday, 8/3 at 12 Noon, so get ready to check it out!

This year's theme is "Help Mitty Save His Mittens!". We had a terrible flood in our office at the end of June and lost most of our inventory of new mittens and gloves that were to be boxed up and distributed in September. We had 32,000 pairs in the office the day of the flood, and we were only able to salvage 7,000 dry pairs to start our 17th Season of Warmth.

We need your help today! Please consider taking the Challenge and making a donation. If you want to share the link, that would be great! Mittens for Detroit exists only because the community wants it to. Thank you for helping us now and always in so many ways. Questions? Let us know!

This link opens at 12pm on Monday, 8/3 and runs through 8/28 at 5pm. QUESTIONS? Email [email protected]

Friends,

It's Sunday night, and it's been a week for sure. Thank you for all of the support and for your patience. I'll need your patience just a little longer.... I'm having hip replacement surgery (great timing, right?) on Monday and will be out for a week or so. I'll be checking in, but honestly I'll be focusing on healing quickly. I have someone checking in on our page to let me know if there's anything that can't wait.

What can you do for Mittens for Detroit and me right now? Please step up and don't let the momentum die on this terrible situation. We are getting great response on our "Disaster Relief" Giving Page (https://bit.ly/HelpMittySaveHisMittens) and a lot of sharing of our posts. While I'm out next week, will you be an Ambassador for Mittens for Detroit and keep this going? Please tell your friends and family.

If you are a Big Sort volunteer, tell your team what happened. If you are a Community Collection Partner, think about what you can do now to let people know you support us. If you are a Distribution Partner, tell your team and your board about what has happened, as it might have a big impact on our ability to get mittens and gloves to you this month. Whatever our relationship is, please help me this week by being great Ambassadors. Thank you so much! See you later this week! ~ Wendy, MFD Executive Director
