We are so excited that the new Portland Leather Goods store in Birmingham, Michigan is celebrating its grand opening with a MittenRaiser! Here's more information!

Portland Leather Goods is having a Birmingham Grand Opening Party on Saturday, 10/17 from 10-7, and they are partnering with Mittens for Detroit to stockpile much-needed gloves and mittens for the winter season. The theme is MITTENS IN MOTOWN! For each pair of new, warm, durable gloves donated, donors will be entered into a raffle drawing. One raffle ticket per donated pair. Prize will be a very well appointed basket containing quality leather goods.

Pairs are for kids, teens, and adults in need in Detroit. Share the gift of warmth! (Please skip the thin, stretchy "magic" gloves from the dollar stores. Thanks!)

When you show up, say hi to two members of our Elite Volunteer Corps - Brynn (morning) and Fran (Noon-2pm). Ask questions – they know stuff about MFD and the work we do every year together.

We are so grateful for this wonderful opportunity to partner with this amazing store. This is especially meaningful as we building our inventory back following our disastrous flood in June. THANK YOU!

Looking for a wonderful hands-on activity for your team? An activity that will warm the hands and hearts of Detroiters? An activity that will be fun, meaningful, AND there are great snacks?

Sign up for a Big Sort Volunteer event for your team! You'll have fun while you sort, count, and pack up new pairs of mittens and gloves for kids, teens, and adults in need in and around Detroit. On September 28th, we had our first big Big Sort of our 17th Season of Warmth. The "Pieing It Forward" team from Little Caesars right up Woodward from us joined us for the first time. They unboxed and counted hundreds of pairs that we just bought from our wonderful glove partner Broner Hat and Glove in Auburn Hills. These are the first new pairs we have for this season, and after our disastrous flood in June, it is wonderful to see the sorting boxes getting full!

*** It’s time to sign up to be a Community Collection Partner for Mittens for Detroit! ***

If you want to help Detroiters stay warm this winter, join MFD’s Community Collection Partner Network! We need your help more than ever this year as we are starting the season with so many fewer pairs in our inventory due to our flood this summer.

You can host one of our branded Collection Boxes at your store, library, coffee shop, medical office, and more. Hosting a holiday party? Ask folks to join you in a MittenRaiser when they bring a pair of new, warm, durable mittens or gloves for all ages. And if you are looking for a great office or community charity action for this winter, you just found it!

This is a terrific school project!

We ask that you aim for 200 pairs as your target. They need to be NEW, WARM, DURABLE. All ages and sizes. PLEASE NOTE: We can’t distribute thin, stretchy dollar store pairs as they are not warm, durable, or suitable for our cold winters. Please encourage folks to think GIFT OF WARMTH. The pairs needn’t be expensive, and they can be manufactured or handmade.

It doesn’t cost anything to participate. We provide the box, poster, and brochures in options for printed and digital.

We need your help to pick up your materials and drop off your collection at its end.

***Mittens for Detroit is getting ready to kick off our 17th Season of Warmth!***

Twelve weeks ago on 6/26, we learned that there was a disastrous flood in our office. THOUSANDS of new pairs of mittens and gloves were destroyed, and we could salvage only about 4,000. It was a heartbreaking event, and we didn’t 5 days just clearing out all of the ruined pairs, boxes, and office materials. A great many thanks to about 30 volunteers who came in shifts to help me - Ally, Little Caesars Enterprises, Bedrock, Rocket volunteers, friends, collection and distribution partners… you were amazing.

Over the summer many hours were spent fundraising and trying to get back on our feet. Grant-writing, ordering pairs to build up our inventory, and much more.

Two weeks ago a wonderful volunteer team from Ally helped start putting our office back together. All of the salvaged pairs were counted and boxed. Furniture was put back into place.

Yesterday, we received our order of new mittens and gloves from Broner Hat and Glove… the retail value is about $20,000+. Still a little more work to be done on the office, and we are nearly back in business!

A huge THANK you to all of you - so many volunteers, so many donors, and innumerable cards, emails, and notes of encouragement. You held us up throughout these dozen weeks. I always say that Mittens for Detroit continues to exist year after year because the community wants us to. You proved that point! Thank you!

As we pause to remember 9/11, let’s remember the kindness and good deeds that followed immediately as we pulled together as a country 25 years ago. Take a moment to do something kind for someone today - hold the elevator door for someone, wish someone a good day, smile at people.

Spend the day in a mood of peace and kindness. Because nice matters… especially as we honor 9/11.

In case you are wondering what your donations do for the students in Hamtramck Public Schools, here's a great report from The Yemeni American News at last winter’s@ distribution. Please take a few minutes to learn more about what we do and the impact that your kindness has on so many kids. The pairs in this video were purchased with grants from last year's Eagles for Children grants from Walnut Creek Country Club and Oakland Hills Country Club.

Our volunteers at this distribution event nearly every are our fabulous partners from Stellantis, led by our great friend Jeff Kalinowski.

Thank you for all that you do to make a difference in the lives of Detroit-area children. It sure does take a village!

School bells are ringing all over Michigan, and kids are back in class! You can help the kiddos be ready to learn and thrive this winter with your donation today and gift of warmth.

New shoes, new jeans, new hoodies, new backpack... that's how some kids start the new school year. Unfortunately, not all kids are able to be outfit with new gear every year. And kids who go to school in the late fall and winter without mittens and gloves on their hands arrive with cold hands. They can't turn book pages, make beautiful art, type on keyboards, play an instrument, or have fun on the playground on recess. When you donate to Mittens for Detroit you'll help provide new, warm, durable pairs to students, and you change the picture completely!

It's so easy. We ask you to help us build up the supply of mittens and gloves that we lost in our flood in June. We ask you to make a donation to help Mitty save his mittens and gloves. We ask you to be part of the solution and make a change in the lives of Detroit students. Can you help us raise funds this week especially to get these pairs purchased in our office by the end of September so we can get them to the schools and onto kids' hands when the early mornings get cold in October?
