A bit of our history

AMERICAN LEGION β€” Berkley American Legion Post 374 on 12 Mile Road as it appeared in April 1964. Construction began in October 1947 and was originally intended as a private home for disabled WWII veteran Bill Barber, but the house was never completed. The Berkley American Legion purchased the unfinished house and two adjoining lots in October 1948 for use as its permanent post headquarters.

The first meeting was held in the basement of the unfinished building in January 1949, and construction was completed in March 1949. A hall was built in 1954, and a new lounge added in 1968. Renovations to the lounge were undertaken in 2008. A portion of the former house now serves as the back office and the original roof from that home is still visible above the ceiling tiles near the restrooms.

American Legion Post 374 is named for Stanley J. Fons who operated the masonry contracting business on Coolidge in Berkley for many years. We recognize the officers and members of the American Legion for their service to our country and for all of the contributions they have made and continue to make in the Berkley community.

But the story of the Berkley American Legion goes back even farther. It was first organized in November 1927 as American Legion Post 371. It was just the second American Legion post in South Oakland County after the Royal Oak post formed in 1920. Edward Parkin was installed as its first commander. However, this incarnation of the American Legion was dissolved during the Great Depression and a new post would not be formed for several more years.

The current Berkley American Legion officially received it charter in July 1940. Ray C. Blackwell, Sr. was the first post commander. They held their meetings in a second story room at the old Metropolitan Club from 1939 to 1948 before relocating to their new permanent home. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
