Check out this recent article in the Bennington Banner about BCMCC's partnership with Molly Stark School, Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, and Bennington Cares. Through a large Farm-to-School grant, BCMCC staff and volunteers from Bennington Cares are working alongside fifth graders to transform the grounds of Molly Stark Elementary and create many new learning opportunities along the way both inside and outside of the classroom.

With federal funds to support refugees under constant threat and with new restrictions on federal programs limiting access for those who are not yet citizens, your donations help ensure that families in Bennington can receive the support they need while they build their new lives here.

The Maple Hill fund was begun by Juliana Centner who lived through World War II in Germany as a child and a refugee. Juliana eventually settled in Shaftsbury, Vermont where she taught kindergarten at the Bennington College Early Childhood Center and became a beloved teacher to elementary children until her retirement. Juliana was active in anti-war/pro peace, human rights and equal rights causes. She cared greatly about the work being done to help others lead full lives. Her fund seeks to support such causes.

BCMCC is thrilled to be working alongside students and teachers at Molly Stark School, staff from Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, and community volunteers from Bennington Cares on a two year project: a comprehensive grounds transformation at Molly Stark Elementary.

"[The grounds transformation] will turn the grounds of Molly Stark, which are the most significant in the district, into a combination of different kinds of hands-on learning opportunities for students...The idea is to have not only the environmental science aspect, but also – because we're doing it with the Multicultural Center – including intergenerational learning opportunities, cross cultural learning opportunities, and multilingual learning opportunities."

Thank you Senator Peter Welch for this statement supporting the Afghan refugees who call Vermont home.

Tonight is the longest night of the year, celebrated in Afghanistan as Shab-e-Yalda. It is a time of deep reflection and contemplation during which stories and poems are shared with friends and family, often by candlelight. It is a practice that honors the darkness and holds out hope for the light that will return. In these difficult times, statements like this one, and the many that have poured in from community members in Bennington, are powerful reminders that light is all around us if we know where to look.
