When we started Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) 24 years ago, the Lord led me to write materials for the preteens in my church. I never imagined those materials would one day be used by preteens in other churches. As the Lord led, I wrote many times in the middle of the night, burdened to see kids grow in their walk with Christ and fully embrace who they are in Him.

The cross illustration was very basic back then. It featured “Jesus” at the heart of the cross, “Read the Bible” at the base, “Talk with God” at the top, “Get Together” on the right side of the crossbar, and “Tell Others” on the left. Our preteens helped choose these titles.
One key component added to the cross was “Jesus is Lord”-SURRENDER (Luke 9:23). He is the flame of discipleship. By the third year of L.I.T., we began recognizing something remarkable: children have spiritual gifts. We then replaced “Get Together” with “Gifts and Ministry.” Then we added an outer ring representing a “Life of Obedience” to Christ.

During that first summer, I wrote a devotional and a leader’s guide every week. We never anticipated how much our preteens would change. As they spent time with Jesus, their lives were transformed.
Over the past 24 years, others have joined me in this call to make the book into what it is today. I am grateful for Amy McMullin, who worked with me to expand the devotional from 13 weeks to 18 weeks. This past year, Russ Zacek revised the book and made many needed updates. To the Lord’s glory, it has become a powerful discipleship tool.

The book now has a new title: “The Way of the Disciple”. As I work through the daily devotional myself, I am blessed by what the Lord has done through it. Through this resource, thousands of preteens have learned the spiritual disciplines of walking with Christ daily. I am forever grateful for what the Lord has done.
This is our passion: to see children’s lives transformed through a living relationship with Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ gets all the glory. This is His ministry, and we are stewards of it.

A Special Need in Zambia

I want to ask you to pray for Kids Connection Preparatory School in Lusaka, Zambia, led by our dear friend and ministry partner, Dr. Isaac Mphande. The school currently serves 569 children, providing an education while investing in their lives and future.
Right now, the school is facing an urgent need. The entire campus has only four toilets—one serving about 150 boys, two serving the remaining girls, and one for the entire staff. With nearly 600 children and staff using these limited facilities every day, the school desperately needs additional toilets and plumbing.

The good news is that we can meet this need. The total cost to complete the necessary plumbing and toilet facilities is $4,000. Would you prayerfully consider helping us reach this goal? “The Day I Stepped Back and Let Them Lead”

“Brother Clint, you need to back off and let us do this. We are ready to lead the trip.” Breane was about 14 years old when she approached me during our mission trip in Granbury, Texas. We had approximately 180 preteens and leaders from ten churches on this six-day mission trip. This was the first day.

When she said this to me, I was taken aback. The first thing I thought was, “Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father” (1 Timothy 5:1). Just as I was about to rebuke her, the Lord spoke to my heart and said, “This is what you have been preparing them for.”

Three-Month L.I.T. Pilot Program in Burkina Faso, Africa - Success! By Heidi Hayslip

Leaders in Training Apprentices

We trained more than 60 children's pastors at the conference in Burkina Faso last March and asked 11 of them to complete a condensed three-month version of L.I.T. in their churches or kids' clubs. Each children's pastor chose 10 kids and has been mentoring and training them once a week to serve as apprentices and help teach and lead during kids' church or kids' club. Then they took the children out for a large evangelistic outreach (which you, our donors, helped fund!). The testimonies coming in are amazing!
