Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we honor those who make the world brighter through selfless acts of compassion.

Eye donors and their families embody the spirit of humanitarianism. Through one generous decision, they give others the chance to see loved ones, return to work, regain independence, and experience life's everyday moments once again.

Thank you to every donor family, healthcare professional, volunteer, and partner who helps restore sight and bring hope to others. 💙

This summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming AHEC students to the Baton Rouge Regional Eye Bank for an inside look at the life-changing impact of eye donation.

Students began their visit with an introduction to our mission from Development Director, Jamie, learning how one generous donor can restore sight and transform lives. They then toured our laboratory with Technical Director, Dora, where they had the opportunity to see corneal tissue samples and learn about the recovery, evaluation, and preservation process firsthand.

We're grateful for the opportunity to educate the next generation of healthcare professionals and inspire a deeper understanding of the gift of sight. Thank you to AHEC and all of the students who spent part of their summer learning with us! 💙👁️

If you spend hours looking at screens, remember the 20-20-20 rule:
👀 Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Taking small breaks can help reduce digital eye strain and keep your eyes feeling their best.

Dr. Velma Scantlebury-White is the first Black woman to become a transplant surgeon in the United States. Over her 40-year-long career, Dr. Scantlebury-White performed an estimated 2,000 organ transplants.
Born in Barbados, she and her family immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, when she was 15. Pursuing her dream of becoming a physician, she eventually earned her medical degree from Columbia University. Eight years later, Dr. Scantlebury-White earned her Doctor of Surgery from Pitt School of Medicine, a first in the country. Recognized as one of the top doctors in the U.S., Dr. Scantlebury-White is passionate about educating communities of color about the need for more organ donors and the rising number of patients in need of transplantation.

Born in New York City in 1936, Dr. Clive Callender decided at seven that he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. In 1969, Dr. Callendar joined the faculty of Howard University School of Medicine. In 1974, he founded the Howard University Hospital Transplant Center, a first among historically black medical schools. He became only the 3rd African American transplant surgeon in the country at that time. With the mission of enhancing organ donation awareness and reducing the number of patients awaiting transplant in minority communities, he founded the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP) in 1992. Today, Dr. Callender is still an active educator at Howard University.

Christmas came a little early at the Baton Rouge Regional Eye Bank! 🎄❤️

On July 29, our wonderful Visionaries joined us for our annual Christmas in July event, where we spent the afternoon creating handmade ornaments that will be included in this year's holiday mailings to our donor families.

While not everyone who volunteered is pictured, we are incredibly grateful to each person who gave their time and talents to help make this event such a success. Your kindness and dedication help us share a small token of comfort and gratitude with the families whose loved ones made the gift of sight possible.

Thank you to all of our Visionaries for helping us spread a little extra love this holiday season. We couldn't do it without you! ❤️🎄
