Sexual violence doesn’t end when the moment does. For many survivors, the impact can show up later as post-traumatic stress.

PTSD isn’t just something that happens after combat. It can affect anyone who experiences trauma, including sexual violence. It may look like flashbacks, trouble sleeping, feeling on edge, or avoiding reminders of what happened.

These responses are not a sign of weakness—they’re how the brain tries to cope with something overwhelming.

Learning this helps us show up with more understanding, less judgment, and real support.

After sexual violence, some survivors notice changes in how they think, feel, or respond to stress. These reactions are common and can show up right away or weeks later.

They can also be symptoms of PTSD and are your body’s response to a stressful event. If you want information or support, call our 24 hour SARC Crisis Line at (337) 233 7273. ☎

What Does a Safe Space Feel Like?

A safe space isn't about having all the answers. It's about having a place where you can show up exactly as you are.

A safe space feels like:

• Being heard without judgment
• Expressing your thoughts and feelings openly
• Knowing you don't have to pretend you're okay
• Having your experiences validated
• Being treated with respect and compassion
• Feeling supported, even during difficult conversations

Everyone deserves a space where they can breathe a little easier, speak a little more freely, and feel a little less alone.

If you are a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault, we are here for you.
