πŸ’š It All Starts With One Rescue

One rescue may not seem like much.

One volunteer. One pickup. One delivery.

But that one rescue could mean fresh produce for a family, bread for a community pantry, or prepared meals for older adults. It could also mean good food is kept out of the landfill.

That's the beauty of food rescue. Small acts, repeated every day by caring people, create an incredible impact across our community.

Whether you've completed one rescue or one hundred, thank you for helping turn surplus food into hope!

Interested in making a difference? There's always room for one more volunteer.

Join us at Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market tomorrow 9-12pm to kick off this exciting new program!

This Saturday, June 20th, we are launching our Second Saturday Harvest Share initiative with Food Rescue US - Akron to connect fresh, local food to our local neighbors in need.

(And yes, the calendar says it’s the third Saturday! We shifted our launch date so Katie Evans, the local site director for Food Rescue Akron, could be on-site with us to kick things off smoothly).

While our farms have the opportunity to donate premium, unsold products at the close of the market, you can participate directly during market hours:

Choose to add an extra item: While doing your weekly shopping, you can purchase an extra item from a vendor, like produce, baked goods, or fresh herbs.

Drop it off: Bring your purchased donation to our designated collection table at the CVFM Info Booth during the market.

Meet the team: Katie Evans will be walking the market with Traci and Andrew and then staying at the table to share information, distribute donation guidelines, and answer questions.

Can’t make it down to the meadow this Saturday? You can still help feed our community by donating here -----> https://givebutter.com/s4PkCJ

See you at the meadow this Saturday! 🌾

πŸ“ About Our Market:
The Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market (CVFM) is your year-round Saturday morning destination for fresh, local, and sustainable food in Northeast Ohio.
Our outdoor Summer Market runs May through October at Howe Meadow (4040 Riverview Road, Peninsula, OH), right in the heart of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. From November through April, our indoor Winter Market moves to Old Trail School (2315 Ira Road, Akron, OH). We are open every Saturday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, rain or shine, serving Akron, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, and our surrounding communities. We proudly offer SNAP and Carrot Cash to ensure fresh food is accessible to all our neighbors.

πŸ•πŸ₯—πŸ“One Decision Can Make a Difference

Every day, businesses face a choice about surplus food.

Will it be thrown away...or will it help feed someone in our community?

Thanks to our generous food donors, that choice is becoming easier. By partnering with Food Rescue US-Akron, surplus food is redirected to local non-profits where it can make an immediate impact instead of ending up in a landfill.

Every rescue helps a business:
πŸ—‘ Reduce hauling costs and eligible for tax incentives
😁Increases employee satisfaction as a chance to work together towards a good cause through team building, collaboration, and motivation.
🀝 Builds community engagement to address food waste and food insecurity

Ways Donors can contribute:
🌟Standard surplus food donations
🌟In emergency situations (i.e. power outages, etc)
🌟Pre-opening training meals
🌟Mis-shipment or over-ordering of ingredients
🌟Cancelled catering orders

So far in 2026, we have rescued over 30k pounds of food from our network of local donors supporting this goal.

We often hear that Food Rescue US-Akron provides a no-brainer solution as we:
πŸ’š Accommodate a schedule that fits their business
πŸ’š Have the nicest and most reliable volunteers
πŸ’š Manage the rescue schedule proactively with changes in agency needs eliminating the guess work if a donation will be picked up
πŸ’šDirectly transfer the food to the receiving agency for peace of mind that the donation will not go to waste

**The Federal Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects food donors and agencies that distribute the donated food to those in need.

πŸ₯•πŸ…πŸ  Reduce Food Waste at Home with Seasonal Cooking

One of the easiest ways to reduce food waste is to cook with what's in season and make the most of the ingredients you already have on hand.

Simple habits like planning meals, storing food properly, freezing extras, and getting creative with leftovers can make a big difference in keeping good food out of the trash. Summer harvests may provide an opportunity to experiment, including adding flavorful fresh herbs and spices to recipes.

Since July 2025, more than 3.5 million people have lost SNAP food assistance. That's nearly a 9% drop in enrollment, driven by tighter eligibility rules and expanded work requirements under the new federal law.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is tracking the fallout in real time, and the picture is stark. As benefits shrink, more families are turning to food pantries, shelters, and rescue programs to put dinner on the table.

That's the work we do every day at Food Rescue US. Moving surplus food from where it would have been wasted to the neighbors who need it most. When safety nets shrink, food rescue scales up.

If you're looking for a way to help in this moment, here are three:
