πŸ‚ A Change of Season. A Chance to Start Fresh.

As summer winds down, our food rescue routines are changing, too.

πŸ… Farmers market rescues are winding down for the season soon, while school food rescues are getting ready to ramp back up.

And with Hunger Action Month in September and Food Waste Prevention Week later in the month, there's no better time to look at your routine and ask:

What new habit can you start?

🀝 For our food donors:
Maybe it's taking a fresh look at what surplus food you have each week and making food rescue part of your regular closing or inventory routine.

πŸš— For our volunteers:
Maybe its choosing a day each week to check the app and claim a rescue- or making food rescue part of your back to school or errand routines.

🏨 For our agency partners:
Maybe it's thinking about what types of rescued food are most useful to your neighbors and sharing that with us as the new season begins.

Small routines can create BIG impact when we do them consistently.

One rescue. One donation. One delivery. One new habit at a time.

September is coming- and we're ready. πŸ’š

Let's make this next season our most impactful one yet.

09/01/2026

September is Hunger Action Month.

48 million Americans face food insecurity, and hunger does not take a month off. This September, we are asking everyone to take one action!

Sign up for a rescue. Talk to a local business about donating surplus food. Share a post. Give what you can.

Every rescue, every dollar, every conversation matters. Join us this September at foodrescue.us.

β“πŸŽ€πŸ’¬ What Has Food Rescue Taught You?

When we started Food Rescue US-Akron, we knew we wanted to keep good food from going to waste and get it to people who could use it.

But along the way, we've learned so much more.

We've learned that:
🍏 Food that one business can't use can be incredibly valuable to another organization.
πŸš— One volunteer giving an hour can make a real difference.
🀝 Community partnerships can create solutions we couldn't accomplish alone.
πŸ‘ Getting to know and making 1:1 connections with volunteers mean so much.
πŸ’š And sometimes the smallest acts of generosity create the biggest ripple effects.

We're curious about you.

If you have volunteered, donated, received rescued food, followed our work, or simply learned something about food waste:

πŸ‘‡ What's one thing Food Rescue US-Akron has taught you?

We'd love to hear from you!

Contributing to well-deserved praise, Dolly Parton helped her food insecure neighbors through her My People Fund, which provided monthly checks to families after natural disasters. In 2025, she also donated $1 million to food banks in Manitoba, Canada.

Dolly shows us what it means to show up for our neighbors. We can all do our partβ€”donate, volunteer, or share what we have.

Be like Dolly. Feed your neighbors.

πŸ•πŸŠπŸ€ Food Safety is at the Heart of What We Do

When we're moving food from a donor to a community agency, food safety matters every step of the way.

At Food Rescue US-Akron:

🏣 Katie and Kim are ServSafe food safety certified and can help answer questions from businesses about what food can and cannot be donated.

πŸ“šOur food rescuers are trained on food safety policies and procedures so they understand their role in keeping rescued food safe.

πŸ“± Our award-winning app makes rescues quick and easy for food rescuers to deliver rescued food from donors to receiving agencies.

πŸš— And locally, the average distance between donor and receiving agency is only 4.5 miles! That short distance means food can get into the hands of our community agencies quickly-without unnecessary stops at storage facilities along the way.

Our direct delivery model helps us more food efficiently, reduce handling, and get surplus food where it can do the most good.

Food Rescue US is proud to be the largest direct delivery food rescue organization in the country.

Whether you're a business with surplus food, an organization that could benefit from rescued food, or someone who wants to volunteer- we'd love to have you join this important mission. πŸ’š

🍞πŸ₯– Bread Can Go a Long Way

There's something we hear from our agency partners over and over again:

"We really appreciate the bread."

Bread may seem like a simple food, but for many of the agencies we serve, it's a donation they don't often receive through other food assistance channels.

And when we rescue bread, it can become so much more than a loaf on a shelf:

🍞 Sandwiches for a family
πŸ₯― Toast for breakfast
πŸ₯– Bread for a community meal
πŸ₯˜ Ingredients for recipes and casseroles
🍽 An easy way to stretch other ingredients into more meals

That's one of the things we love about food rescue- we don't always know exactly how a donation will be used but we know it delivers so much value!

A surplus of bread that might otherwise be discarded can become meals, comfort, and nourishment for people in our community.

Thank you to the donors who makes these rescues possible and to our volunteers who pickup and deliver them. And a special thank you to our agency partners for sharing what foods are most valuable to the people they serve.

Sometimes a simple loaf of bread can make a bigger difference than you realize.πŸ’š

πŸ’šπŸ€ Agency Partner Spotlight: Safe Harbor Sober Living

Today, we're proud to spotlight Safe Harbor Sober Living, one of the agencies that helps turn rescued food into meaningful support for people in our community.

Through our partnership, surplus food that might otherwise go to waste can be redirected to Safe Harbor, where it can help provide nourishment for residents as they work toward stability, recovery, and a stronger future.

Food rescue is about more than moving food from one place to another. It's about connecting donors, volunteers, and agencies so that resources can be shared with people and organizations that can put them to good use.

We're grateful to Safe Harbor Sober Living for the work that they do and for being part of the Food Rescue US-Akron network.

Together, we're proving that when a community shares what it has, everyone benefits.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ₯•πŸ€ Show Your Support to Standardize Food Date Labels

As a follow-up to our post the other day, here's another way to help reduce food waste.

Have you ever thrown away food because you weren't sure if the date on the package meant if it was safe to eat? You're not alone- a nationally representative survey found that 88% of consumers throw away food near the package date label at least occasionally, even though that food is often still perfectly good.

This kind of confusion is one of the leading causes of food waste in the United States. In 2024 alone, unclear date labels contributed to an estimated 3.5 million tons of wasted food, and the average household spends more than $762 a year on food that ends up in the trash.

The good news is there is a simple fix. The Food Date Labeling Act (FDLA) would create one standardized system for food date labels nationwide, using just two clear phrases: "BEST If Used By" for quality, and "USE By" for safety.

Will you sign Zero Food Waste Coalition's petition today to show Congress there's public support for standardizing food date labels?

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Sign the petition: https://zerofoodwastecoalition.org/224229-2/

Every signature helps make the case that clearer labels save families money and keep good food out of landfills. Thank you for helping us take this important step toward reducing food waste.
