Smartish Pace Smartish Pace is a non-profit poetry magazine in Baltimore founded in 1998 by Stephen Reichert.

Eleanor Lewis is a poet and former co-editor of the Baltimore literary magazine, THE PEARL. Her chapbook, The Endless Undoing, was published by UnCollected Press in 2024. Her work has been published in JMWW, Maryland Poetry Review, Poet Lore, Loch Raven Review, and Shattered Wig Review among other publications.

The HOT L Poets Series is presented by Smartish Pace and Baltimore Poets Theatre. Readings are held on the second Sunday of the month at Bird in Hand or The Ivy Bookshop in Baltimore and include two featured poets, reading from their recent books, along with an open mic (typcially 8-12 poets reading one poem each).

Baltimorean David Beaudouin is a widely published poet, educator, and editor. He was the founder of Tropos Press (1976-2001), one of the region’s earliest independent literary presses, as well as the literary magazine THE PEARL (1980-2001). He is the author of seven books of poetry, most recently Afters (Bowerbox Press, 2024) and On Down the Line (UnCollected Press, 2026), which features a 30-year selection of his work. David’s poem “Annunciation” was selected for inclusion in The Best American Poetry 2025. His Substack newsletter, NY Poets :: IOU, has featured conversations with poets Elinor Nauen, Michael Lally, Maureen Owen, and Tony Towle, among others.

Jan Beatty’s eighth book, Dragstripping, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2024. She’s the winner of the Red Hen Nonfiction Award for American Bastard, and the Paterson Prize for Jackknife: New and Selected Poems (Pitt, 2017). She worked as a waitress, abortion counselor, and in maximum security prisons.

Chris Watkins is a trans poet, environmental activist, and author of The Drag Gospel of Q***r Jesus (Saturnalia, 2026), winner of the publisher’s Alma Book Award. They live in North Florida and work as the Academics and Partnerships Coordinator at FSU’s Office of Sustainability and teach writing and sustainability courses.
