Applicants residing in World Bank-designated low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are eligible for an automatic waiver of the $20 application fee and may apply for competitive scholarship support.

The 5-day online course (November 2-6, 2026) features training from leading virologists on emerging viral threats, diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and pandemic preparedness, plus networking and career development opportunities.

Fifty years ago, GVN's Robert C. Gallo (USF Health-University of South Florida Institute for Translational Virology & Innovation; Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute) and his colleagues pursued a basic scientific question that led to discoveries they could not have predicted.

In a new STAT opinion piece, GVN Co-founder and International Scientific Director Dr. Gallo reflects on the discovery of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and how it helped make possible the growth of human T cells in the laboratory, the discovery of the first human retroviruses and HIV, and advances in modern cancer immunotherapy. These are connections GVN and its partners also highlighted during the 50th anniversary of the IL-2 discovery in September.

The larger lesson, he writes, is one that remains critical today: transformative advances often begin with basic research whose ultimate applications cannot yet be imagined.

The GVN is now accepting applications for a paid Science and Public Health Communications Assistant Internship.

This remote, semester-based opportunity gives undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience supporting communications, marketing, and public affairs activities across GVN's global network of virologists, researchers, and public health experts.

Interns will contribute to social media content, digital communications, newsletters, website updates, research projects, media outreach support, and other communications initiatives while building skills in science communication and public health engagement.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled at a U.S.-based university or college that hosts a GVN Center of Excellence or Affiliate and be available to work 15-20 hours per week during U.S. Eastern Time business hours.

Pay: $15/hour
