At the 2026 Global Guardians for Pandemic Preparedness program, students learned about the Virtual Insectary and Center for Global Health and Inter-Disciplinary Research (GHIDR) Tour from Samantha Barnes, Program Manager at the Center for Global Health and Inter-Disciplinary Research.

Barnes's presentation discussed how insects are raised to study insect disease by researchers, presented the malaria life cycle, and gave students a virtual tour.

At the 2026 Global Guardians for Pandemic Preparedness program, students had the opportunity to tour the USF Health Institute for Translational Virology and Innovation (ITVI) labs of Drs. Hongshuo Song and Zach Porterfield.

The tour gave students the opportunity to examine microscope imaging, learn more about lab equipment, and see some in action.

2026 GVN Short Course & Virtual Mini Course: Secure Your Spot Today

The Global Virus Network is now accepting applications for the 2026 Short Course in Translational Virology, held in Tampa, Florida, from November 2–13. This is your chance to learn from leading virologists at GVN Centers of Excellence about emerging viral threats, immunology, therapeutics, vaccines, and pandemic preparedness. Participants earn a GVN Short Course Certificate and join a network of more than 150 alumni worldwide.

New for 2026: The Virtual Mini Course offers undergraduate and master's students professional development opportunities in community engagement, grant writing, science communication, education, and policy development. Participants earn a GVN Mini-Certificate in Translational Virology.

Below is general information on fees:
• Virtual Short Course: $500 / $250 (LMIC) / $200 (students and trainees)
• Virtual Mini Course: $100
• $20 application fee (applied toward tuition if accepted)

Deadlines:
• September 18: In-person Short Course application deadline for participants requiring lodging
• October 16: Virtual Short Course, local in-person Short Course, and Virtual Mini Course application deadline
• Only 30 in-person Short Course seats are available

Students engaged in asking questions and later had the opportunity to speak with the healthcare professionals one-on-one in a breakout session.

The GVN Virtual Mini Course is designed specifically for you. This new virtual program offers training in essential professional skills, including community engagement, mentorship, grant writing, science communication, education, and policy development. Sessions take place each morning from 9:00–10:30 a.m. ET during the GVN Short Course (November 2–13).

Participants earn a GVN Mini-Certificate in Translational Virology upon completion. Applications are due October 16, 2026.

How to Apply:
• Submit a CV and one-page career goals statement
• $20 application fee (applied toward tuition if accepted)

Through a hands-on demonstration, students were able to see visualize how respiratory viruses transmit through the air and infect individuals.

At the 2026 Global Guardians for Pandemic Preparedness program, students stepped into the shoes of frontline responders. Through an immersive tabletop simulation, they placed themselves inside a hospital navigating an outbreak scenario.

This simulation was an engaging activity that allowed students to see the various healthcare professionals, resources, and protocols involved in outbreak responses.
