Every day at the University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital (UMGCH), the health and well-being of children is our priority. With October being National Children’s Health Month, there is no better time to shine a light on the remarkable progress happening throughout the hospital.

One of our most recent advances is the establishment of two pediatric-focused endowed professorships at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, made possible by Tom Golisano’s historic $50 million gift to UMGCH. Among the highest honors bestowed on faculty, these professorships will advance cell and gene therapies and complex cardiac care for children.

We are grateful to Tom for his extraordinary generosity and look forward to seeing the breakthroughs to come thanks to his gift.

We know our dedicated care teams at the University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital (UMGCH) are extraordinary, but this story in People is a powerful example of just how extraordinary they are.

Shane Montgomery was born at just 22 weeks and spent 144 days in The Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UMGCH. The advanced care he received ultimately saved his life and today, Shane is thriving.

Stories like this underscore the impact of exceptional pediatric care, and the important role that philanthropy plays in advancing it. Congrats to the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) team for receiving the Gold Level Award of Excellence from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. This honor is the highest recognition for ECMO programs worldwide.

University of Maryland Medical Center proudly recognizes and congratulates our robust multidisciplinary ECMO team for being recognized with the Gold Level Award of Excellence by the ELSO - Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.

ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) or ECLS (Extracorporeal Life Support) is one of the most advanced forms of life support available. It helps support failing organ systems in infants, children, and adults using a heart-lung machine to oxygenate blood outside the body.

The ELSO Award of Excellence is the organization’s highest recognition for ECMO programs worldwide, honoring centers that demonstrate exceptional processes, systems, and practices that advance excellence in extracorporeal life support care.

This Gold Level designation reflects the team’s commitment to evidence-based care, comprehensive education and training, continuous quality improvement, exceptional patient outcomes and multidisciplinary collaboration across critical care, surgery, perfusion, ECMO specialists, nursing, and other specialties.
