“Along the Lines” exhibition now on view in the Make Studio gallery! Ft. Dina Klar, Kareem Samuels and Alex Albert.
Reception Sat • June 6 • 2-5pm - save the date!

Even though their respective tenures with Make Studio range between 1 and 15 years, and their artistic styles vary just as widely, the distinctive presence of line work is a common denominator in the art practices of Kareem Samuels, Alex Albert and Dina Klar.

In her homages to superheroes, Dina Klar builds rich, linear, occasionally bird-nest-like textures which dominate over the presence of color.

“Along the Lines” examines how the three featured artists and their individual practices relate to each other.

New Artists Alert! Continuing our new artist series, "Introducing..." in which we publicly welcome our newest Make Studio artists.

Abigail "Abby" Rutz is building her skills making watercolor and pencil portraits of characters from her favorite shows, especially animated ones like Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. She works quickly and in multiples, creating one version of her paintings for home and one to stay at the studio. Abby enjoys singing while she creates, the joyful tunes getting her in the flow. Welcome to the studio, Abby!

[The first slide shows Abby, a young white woman with glasses and a black and white collared shirt layered with a black top smiling at the camera. The second slide shows "Anna and Elsa" two figures rendered in opaque watercolor with glowing blue eyes. The third slide is "Penny" a transparent watercolor portrait of a girl with a big head, thick eyeliner and red lips crossing her arms. The fourth slide is "Trio": purple, green and magenta monochrome figures with top hats and black boots. The fifth slide is "Angeldust" a grey and pink figure with a long neck, sharp grinning teeth and two sets of arms.]

New Artists Alert! Welcome back to our new artist series, "Introducing..." in which we publicly welcome our newest Make Studio artists.

Gregory "Gee" Giles is finding his groove working on wood surfaces and hopes to expand soon to painting on furniture. His current process is exploratory and involves layers of tape and paint. Gee is enjoying community studio life, connecting and conversing with other artists while painting. Welcome to the studio, Gee!

Stay tuned for another new artist intro before the week is through! (sneak peek: it's Abby!)

[The first slide shows Gee, a young Black man in a white tshirt focusing in on a drawing out of view. The second slide pictures Gee's paintings on wooden circles sitting on a granny square afghan. The light is gleaming on the black painted surface of the circles, revealing textured bars criss-crossing the surface. The third slide is a painting made with melted wax on white canvas, a shimmering rainbow of blue, yellow and red dots and speckles.]
