We're so excited to welcome our new Youth Mentor and Volunteer Coordinator! Here's an introduction from Anne....

I grew up on Bainbridge Island and attended BHS. While I was there, I regularly went to BYS to volunteer as a tutor and to receive support. Now that I have graduated from college with a BS in mathematics, I am so happy to return to this organization. As a Youth Mentor & Volunteer Coordinator, I'll be working closely with peer tutors to offer support and guidance. I'm incredibly excited to see my journey come full circle and to have the opportunity to support my community as they have supported me.

This fall, Bainbridge Youth Services is partnering with Dr. Janis Whitlock, PhD, MPH, a nationally recognized expert on youth mental health and self-injury, for an interactive workshop designed specifically for youth ages 15–18.

We’ll talk about:

• What self-injury is—and isn’t
• How to recognize when a friend may be struggling
• What to say when someone opens up
• When to involve a trusted adult
• How to support yourself and others

Youth will have a chance to talk, practice, and participate through small-group discussion and practicing real-life conversation skills.

BYS therapists will help facilitate the activities and answer questions.
