We’ve been waiting for this one… Meet Amber, your Executive Director! 🎾🎉
“My Grandfather Jordan and my Dad were avid tennis players, so I was fortunate to be introduced to tennis before I can remember. My Mom says we’d go to the courts before I could walk. Growing up, my siblings and I were exposed to tennis all the time - we played at all the courts around Austin, while our parents played leagues and tournaments. Tennis was our life and judging by the walls of trophies they accumulated; they weren’t too shabby at the game. Eventually my Dad made a career of tennis right here in Northwest Austin. He taught me to play, and I had the privilege of playing for Westwood High my Freshman and Sophomore year. Life led me in a different direction then, and largely in part because I did not understand the gravity of what tennis could offer. But thankfully - tennis waits for you to be ready for it again. In my late 20s, tennis found me again and it has given back to me more than I had ever considered giving it.
I’ve seen that tennis can be the conduit for more than you can imagine. My closest friends are my opponents and partners, teammates and enemies, depending on the day. My health and my physical fitness are largely due to playing tennis regularly. And now my career stems around tennis. The gratitude I have for this game will never be describable; it’s like part of your DNA that you appreciate is invaluable, but without studying it, you can’t understand. At last year’s Awards Ceremony, Juan articulated this perfectly; your best friends are on the court with you, but you may never see them anywhere else.
Yes, tennis gives us health, wellness, mental acuity, maybe an extra 9 years. And it gives you love - not just in the score, but through the people tennis brings into your life.
Tennis wants to grow here in the Austin area, but it faces shrinking because of court access.
