In addition to our local conservation work, Kennebec County SWCD coordinates the Maine Envirothon, an environmental education program that gives high school students hands-on experience with natural resources and environmental science.

On October 16, KCSWCD coordinated the Maine Envirothon’s Central Fall Field Day at the University of Maine’s Witter Farm. The event brought together 74 students from seven schools to learn about soils, wildlife, aquatics, tree identification, and map and compass skills.

We’re grateful for our continued partnership with the University of Maine’s School of Forest Resources, whose support helps make these events possible. Thank you to our hosts and their staff, presenters, participating schools, advisors, and students for making the event possible!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our workshops this fall!

In late September, we explored live staking as a way to stabilize shorelines and support restoration efforts. Last week, we learned about invasive plants, how they spread, and methods for identifying and managing them.

We appreciate everyone who took the time to participate, as well as our presenters and partners who helped make these workshops possible!

Why is certified heat-treated firewood safe against invasive pests? It has been heated to 160 degrees for 75 minutes to kill any potential diseases or insects hiding in the wood. Protect the trees you love! Research shows it is best to move firewood less than 10 miles from where it was harvested to prevent the spread of invasive forest pests.

Keep an eye out for the egg masses of the Spotted Lanternfly. They look like gray putty or brown cracked mud. You might see them on a smooth surface like your car or even stuck to your grill.
