A friendly reminder on why it's best not to feed ducks and geese on the lake.

We know it’s tempting to toss a little food to our feathered friends, but ducks are happiest and healthiest when they find their own natural food.

Feeding ducks can cause them to gather in one area, which means more droppings and extra nutrients entering the water. Over time, those nutrients can contribute to algae growth and impact water quality. Bread and other human foods aren’t healthy for ducks either.

The best way to enjoy our ducks is to watch, admire, and let them stay wild.

A simple choice not to feed them helps protect Togus Pond and the wildlife we all love. 🦆 Wild ducks are happy ducks!

Malnutrition, disease, habitat degradation, and habituation are serious consequences of feeding ducks and geese.

We are incredibly grateful to our Courtesy Boat Inspectors for their dedication to protecting Togus Pond. Every weekend, they're on the front lines helping educate boaters, inspecting watercraft, and working to keep invasive aquatic species out of our lake. Their friendly conversations and careful inspections make a real difference.

When our inspectors aren't on duty, we all play an important role. Before entering or leaving any water body, remember to:

💧 Clean your boat, trailer, and equipment.
💧 Drain all water from your boat, motor, live wells, and bilge.
💧 Dry everything thoroughly before launching in another lake.

These dedicated team members spend long hours at the boat launch inspecting boats, trailers, and gear for aquatic invasive plants that could permanently harm our lake. Every inspection is an important step in keeping Togus Pond healthy for everyone to enjoy.

2026 Togus Pond Loon count is in! Thanks to volunteers Aaron Smiley and Dick and Betty Harvey for doing the count this year. They reported seeing 11 Adults and no chicks during this year's survey.

On the third Saturday of July each year from 7 to 7:30 am, more than 1,800 volunteers venture to over 400 lakes and ponds across the state to count loons. The observations recorded by our community scientist volunteers provide an excellent “snapshot” of the loon population in Maine. Since 1983, volunteers have been counting loons on Maine lakes to help monitor the health of the population.

Meet Lucas. We're excited to have Lucas as one of our Courtesy Boat Inspectors (CBI) at Togus Pond this season!

If you see Lucas or any of the CBI at the public boat launch, be sure to say hello. They'll be inspecting boats and trailers for aquatic invasive species, answering questions, and helping boaters protect the lake we all love.

Why is this important? Aquatic invasive species can spread from one lake to another by hitching a ride on boats, trailers, and gear. Once they become established, they are extremely difficult and expensive to remove. The best way to protect Togus Pond is to prevent invasive species from entering in the first place.

A quick inspection and a reminder to Clean, Drain, and Dry your boat can make all the difference.

We'd also like to thank the City of Augusta, the China Regional Lakes Alliance, and the Kennebec Water District for partnering with us to make this important program possible.
