The best Halloween costume might be a character from a book.

Hear us out...
-Harry Potter.
-Pete the Cat.
-The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
-A princess from a favorite fairy tale.
-A superhero from a graphic novel.
-A character from a mystery.

The possibilities are endless! And there's something pretty fun about bringing a character from a page into the real world.

This Halloween, ask your child: “If you could dress up as ANY character from a book, who would you choose?” Then read the book together!

It turns a Halloween costume into a conversation about characters, stories, imagination, and reading. Bonus points if they convince the whole family to dress up as characters from the same book!

Kids may not remember every worksheet. They may not remember every spelling word. They may not remember the exact book they read.

But they probably remember the person who sat beside them when reading was difficult.

The person who listened. The person who encouraged them. The person who said, “Try it again.” The person who celebrated a small improvement.

That's one reason mentoring and volunteer support are such important parts of the work happening through RISE Augusta.

Children need people who see their potential, especially when they may not see it in themselves yet. Sometimes, making a difference doesn't require a grand gesture.

It starts with showing up consistently.

Give your child a weekend challenge: Find a book about something you know absolutely nothing about.

-Dinosaurs.
-Space.
-Ancient civilizations.
-Animals you've never heard of.
-A sport you've never played.
-A person you've never met.
-A place you've never visited.

Then spend a few minutes exploring it together.

The best part of reading is that books can take us places we may never physically visit and introduce us to ideas we may never encounter otherwise.

Your child doesn't have to read a 300-page book to experience that. A few pages can spark a question. A question can lead to a conversation. A conversation can lead to curiosity. And curiosity is a pretty powerful thing.

What will your family discover this weekend?

It's easy to think of a book donation as simply dropping off a box and walking away.

But that book has somewhere to go. It can become part of a child's home library. It can introduce a student to a new subject. It can give siblings something to read together. It can help a child discover an author, character, or story they wouldn't have encountered otherwise.

And perhaps most importantly, it puts a book within reach.

For RISE Augusta, collecting books is part of a larger mission to improve literacy opportunities for children and families in our community.

So the next time you find yourself with books your family has outgrown, don't automatically think of them as clutter. Think of them as stories waiting for their next reader!

That's a pretty good reason to clean out the bookshelf.

Not every reader looks the same.

Some kids devour books. Some read one page and immediately need a snack break. Some love nonfiction. Some want nothing but stories. Some would rather listen to a book than read it themselves. Some need extra support before reading feels comfortable.

And that's okay! There isn't one personality type, interest, or reading style that makes someone a “real reader.”

At RISE Augusta, we believe children deserve opportunities to develop their literacy skills while discovering what makes reading meaningful to *them*.

That might happen through tutoring, access to books, encouragement from a mentor, or because someone finally puts the right story into their hands.

The goal is to help every child have the opportunity to grow as a reader.

Looking for a Little Spooky Fun? 🎃📖 October is basically an invitation to break out the mystery, monsters, ghosts, and creepy stories!

And yes, those books count as reading too. 😉

For kids who aren't immediately drawn to traditional children's literature, spooky stories can be a great way to make reading feel exciting.

Try a mystery.

Find a silly monster story.

Read a Halloween-themed nonfiction book.

Explore the legends behind a favorite spooky creature.

Then ask your child:
👻 Would you want to meet this character?
🎃 What would you do if you were in the story?
🕷️ What makes this story creepy?
🔦 What do you think will happen next?

Reading doesn't always have to be quiet and serious. This October, let your child's interests lead the way to a good book.

October is a great excuse to talk about something we already love: BOOKS!

But here's a question for you: What was the book you couldn't put down as a kid?

Maybe it was a mystery that kept you guessing. Maybe it was a fantasy world you wished you could visit. Maybe it was a funny book you read under the covers with a flashlight. Or maybe you didn't become a reader until you found the *right* book.

That's the thing about reading. There isn't one book that works for every child.

That's why access to a variety of books matters. When children have opportunities to explore different stories, subjects, characters, and ideas, they're more likely to discover something that captures their interest.

This October, celebrate National Book Month by sharing a favorite book with a child.

Better yet, ask them: What's a book YOU love?

You might just discover their next favorite story together.

It looks like teachers noticing when a student needs help. It looks like volunteers giving their time. It looks like someone donating books instead of letting them collect dust. It looks like mentors showing up. It looks like businesses supporting literacy programs. It looks like families asking for help when they need it.

That's the heart of RISE Augusta.

The work isn't about one program or one solution. It's about bringing together resources, people, and opportunities to help local children and young adults thrive. And the best part?

You don't have to do everything to make a difference. You just have to find one way to get involved.

There's something special about seeing a child connect with someone from their own community. That's part of what makes RISE Augusta's "Read With Me" YouTube series so fun.

Local community members and “local celebrities” read books aloud so children can enjoy stories from home. It's completely FREE. No complicated registration, no special equipment! Just a child, a story, and a few minutes to listen.

It's a great resource for families looking to build reading into their day or for those moments when you need a little something different.

Head over to the RISE Augusta YouTube channel and find a story to read with your child today.
