๐Ÿ’— Do You Know Your Lifetime Risk of Breast Cancer?

Knowing your breast cancer risk shouldnโ€™t start at age 40 when you schedule your first mammogram. Understanding your risk earlier can help determine when screening should begin and whether you may benefit from additional screening, such as breast MRI.

Your lifetime risk assessment considers several factors, which may include:

๐ŸŽ€ Family history of breast and ovarian cancer
๐ŸŽ€ Breast density
๐ŸŽ€ Age and reproductive history
๐ŸŽ€ Previous breast biopsies or high-risk breast lesions
๐ŸŽ€ Genetic and hereditary risk factors
๐ŸŽ€ Other personal and family history

Women who are identified as high risk may benefit from enhanced screening, including breast MRI in addition to mammography.

๐Ÿ’ป Want to know your risk?

You can calculate your own lifetime breast cancer risk using the Tyrer-Cuzick Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool available through Operation Breast Density.

Once completed, print or save your results and review them with your healthcare provider. Your provider can help interpret your score and discuss whether supplemental screening or genetic evaluation may be appropriate for you.

๐Ÿ’— Know your risk. Know your density. Know your screening options.

Early detection starts with understanding YOUR individual risk.

๐Ÿ’— Dense Breasts Arenโ€™t Just Harder to Screen โ€” They Can Also Increase Your Risk
Did you know that having dense breast tissue is an independent risk factor for developing breast cancer?

Women with extremely dense breasts may have approximately a 4โ€“6 times greater risk of developing breast cancer compared with women who have predominantly fatty breast tissue.

Dense breasts matter in two important ways:

๐ŸŽ€ They can increase your risk of developing breast cancer.
๐Ÿ”Ž They can make breast cancer harder to see on a mammogram, because both dense tissue and cancers appear white.

Thatโ€™s why knowing your breast density is so important. If you have dense breasts, talk with your healthcare provider about your overall breast cancer risk and whether additional screening may be appropriate for you.

๐Ÿ’— Know your density. Know your risk. Know your screening options.

๐Ÿ’— Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammogram: Whatโ€™s the Difference?
Theyโ€™re both mammograms, but theyโ€™re used for different reasons!

๐ŸŽ€ SCREENING MAMMOGRAM
A screening mammogram is a routine breast cancer screening test for women who do not have breast symptoms. Its purpose is to look for breast cancer before there are signs or symptoms.

๐Ÿ”Ž DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAM
A diagnostic mammogram is used when there is a specific breast concern that needs further evaluation. This may include:

โ€ข A breast lump
โ€ข Ni**le discharge or other new breast changes
โ€ข An abnormal finding on a screening mammogram
โ€ข An area that requires additional or more detailed imaging

Diagnostic mammography typically involves additional or specialized mammographic views, and other imagingโ€”such as an ultrasoundโ€”may also be performed if needed.

๐Ÿ’ก The easy way to remember it:
Screening = routine check when you have no symptoms
Diagnostic = investigating a symptom or abnormal finding

And remember: If you notice a new breast lump or other concerning breast change, donโ€™t wait for your next screening mammogram. Talk with your healthcare provider.

๐Ÿ’— Know your breasts. Know your density. Know your screening options.

๐ŸŽ€ Previous breast biopsies or high-risk breast lesions
