THE KIT & KABOODLE ON KIT HOMES
The early part of the 20th Century saw an American phenomenon in single family housing made possible by a confluence of events. The assembly line process Henry Ford brought to automobile manufacture was extended to home building. Never before in history was there such a choice in housing for the average person. From the planned communities for worker housing to mail order houses, families could achieve the American Dream. Oakland County was no exception and many of the houses we admire today are the result of kit homes and mail order houses.

During recent renovations of the former Boys & Girls Club on corner of Squirrel and Waukegan old layers of siding were being removed which revealed a stone inscription "Auburn Heights Community Club" on the oldest section of the building. This is wonderful because it identifies that Auburn Heights had a Community Club and where it was located. Does anyone have any early photographs of this building of when the original front entrance was visible and exactly what it looked like?

The AHHS has received a few pieces of "Amy Michigan" glass tableware consisting of a cup and set of salt and pepper shakers generiously donated to the AHHS. Auburn Heights was previously named Amy from 1880 to 1919. Does anyone else have any tableware pieces matching these? The AHHS would be interested in learning if any more exist and if anyone wishes to donate their pieces to the AHHS we would be very happy to add them to this growing collection in the AHHS archive.

All Aboard - mark Saturday April 27, 2024 from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon on your calendars. Take an engaging look at one of America’s most recognizable and endearing building types, the train depot. For most cities, including Auburn Hills, the depot was the center of commerce, information and transportation. Depots often became the landmark identity of the community it served. Presentation is FREE to the public and no registration required. Come join the Auburn Hills Historical Society with presenters Ron Campbell and Jackie Hoist as they take you back in time to when a locomotive on rails was the best way to travel.

The Auburn Hills Historical Society extends a huge THANK YOU to Dennis Peterson for donating the original Weathervane which once stood on top of the Grist (flouring) Mill that was located in Riverside Park. This Weathervane is well over 100 years old and is a historically significant part of the Grist Mill because the weathervane is easily identified in photographs of the Grist Mill. The Weathervane now resides in the Historical Society archive preserved as a significant piece of our community's history.
