A gift in your will may be simpler than you think.

When people hear the word bequest, they often assume it's only for people with significant wealth. The truth? That's one of the biggest misconceptions.

Here are a few things that might surprise you:

✔️ You don't have to be wealthy to leave a gift in your will.
✔️ It can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate.
✔️ It doesn't cost you anything during your lifetime.
✔️ You can change your will at any time if your circumstances or priorities change.

Did you know that more than half of Americans don't have a will, even though most of us agree it's important? This August, for National Make-A-Will Month, we're sharing a simple guide to charitable bequests, what they are, the different ways to leave one, and why more people are choosing this way to support the causes they love for generations to come.

At Project Canaan Academy, two brothers approached their principal with a simple idea: "What if we had an earlier break during the school day?"

Their thought was that a short morning break would give students a chance to refresh. Instead of dismissing the idea, the leadership team listened.

Today, that second break has become part of the school day and the impact has been remarkable. Students are more refreshed, they're enjoying the change, and it's made a positive difference across the entire school.

While the extra break has been a wonderful addition, what inspires us most is something deeper.

These young brothers saw an opportunity to make their school better, had the confidence to share their idea, and experienced the powerful lesson that thoughtful leadership can create meaningful change.

At Heart for Africa, we're not just educating students, we're helping raise confident young leaders who know they can contribute, solve problems, and make a difference in their communities.

When we asked Principal Busi to reflect on the past year at Project Canaan Academy, one theme stood out above all else: intentional growth.

She shared that Project Canaan Academy is so much more than a school. It's a place where children are nurtured academically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially - a place where every child is encouraged to discover and develop their God-given potential.

Principal Busi spoke of teachers who arrive early each morning, ready to invest in their students, and children who embrace learning with enthusiasm and purpose. She described a school culture built on high expectations, meaningful relationships, and the belief that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.

She also shared her vision for the future: raising confident young people who are not only equipped with strong academic skills, but who are critical thinkers, compassionate leaders, and problem solvers prepared to make a difference in their communities.

For many years, the Crea family has faithfully loved and supported the work of Heart for Africa, and last week it was our privilege to welcome them to Project Canaan for a visit that is especially meaningful.

After serving as CEO of Feed My Starving Children for many years, Mark Crea and his wife, Rosanne, were gifted a trip to Africa in honor of his faithful leadership. They chose to spend as much time as possible at Project Canaan, sharing the experience with their family and seeing firsthand the impact of God's work in Eswatini.

One particularly special moment was visiting Noelle's Place, a place on Project Canaan that holds deep meaning for the Crea family. This park was named in memory of Mark and Roseanne's daughter, Noelle. Being able to experience it together made this visit even more memorable.

The Crea family also treated our Project Canaan children to a special dinner of delicious braai meat and fries! It was an evening filled with smiles, laughter, and grateful hearts as the children and staff enjoyed this generous gift.

We are so grateful for the Crea family's many years of friendship, generosity, and unwavering love for the children of Project Canaan. Thank you, Mark, Rosanne, and your entire family, for continuing to invest your hearts in this ministry. ❤️

We have some exciting news to share! Heart for Africa has been named a FINALIST in two categories at the 2026 Africa Supply Chain Excellence Awards, an industry-led program recognizing outstanding supply chain initiatives across Africa, now in its fifth year.

We were selected for the egg supply chain built through Project Canaan's Hunger Initiative (which now delivers reliable protein to approximately 6,500 children every month across rural Eswatini), and for the closed-loop agricultural system on Project Canaan, from gravity-fed water infrastructure to solar energy and vermiculture composting.

These are supply chain awards, judged by supply chain professionals. We're honored that the systems built at Project Canaan out of necessity, for the benefit of children are being recognized at this level.

Education is about so much more than learning to read, write or solve a math problem. For a child, education builds confidence. It creates routine. It teaches perseverance, curiosity and hope. It opens doors that once seemed impossible to imagine.

For many vulnerable children in Eswatini, education can be the difference between simply surviving today and having the opportunity to shape tomorrow. It equips children with the knowledge, skills and confidence to break cycles of poverty and pursue futures filled with possibility.

That's why providing education is one of the four pillars of Heart for Africa's mission.

At Project Canaan Academy, our children aren't just preparing for exams. They're learning to think critically, solve problems, discover their God-given gifts and become future leaders who will make a difference in their communities.

Every lesson learned today helps build a stronger tomorrow.

After joining us for Heart for Africa's 20th Anniversary celebration in Eswatini this June, our Stewardship Coordinator, Riley Powell, came home with memories she'll never forget. From visiting families in the surrounding communities and sharing those moments with our volunteers, to celebrating two decades of God's faithfulness alongside our staff and friends, the trip left a lasting impact.
