Comunidad Connect Board Members and Staff recently met with a consortium of our Academic Partners to align efforts and strengthen community healthcare in the Dominican Republic and beyond. Georgia State Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions hosted the event, providing lunch for attendees and A/V for our virtual guests.

Attendees included long-term partners like GA State and Kennesaw State, as well as relative newcomers University of Tennessee, Rochester Institute of Technology, Jacksonville College, and Flagler University. For over a decade, we have been hosting students and faculty from these institutions for global education and also facilitating research.

Comunidad Connect’s Jon Thompson shared the growth and impact of the Cultural Connections Program, along with new opportunities for internships, field placements, and pop-up clinics for alumni who are now medical professionals.

CC Board Member, Dr. Nishant Kishore, shared our emerging science policy and invited attendees to share research interests and help identify synergies for future collaboration.

Thank you to the members and institutions in attendance for your partnership and collaborative spirit. We’re excited to keep building alongside you and welcome new partners ready to be part of what’s ahead.

In Los Robles, Nicaragua, Doña Maribel (65) is raising her two grandchildren, ages 8 and 2, while living with severe chronic back pain that makes daily tasks difficult.

She relies on what her daughters can send from Managua to buy food and medication, but when work is inconsistent, so is their ability to get by. On many days, the pain is so intense she cannot bend, put on her shoes, or even get out of bed without help. At times, her 8-year-old grandson steps in to help her dress.

For years, Doña Maribel had no access to a bathroom. She was forced to go out to nearby fields, holding onto a stick for support because she could not bend her knees. She faced constant risk of falling, injury, and being seen, often putting her safety and dignity at risk.

Today, that has changed. Doña Maribel now has a safe, accessible bathroom at home. She no longer has to risk her health or safety just to meet a basic need. She can rest more easily, move with greater confidence, and focus on caring for her grandchildren.

This is what Baños for Good makes possible! Thank you to everyone who made this possible and continues to bring dignity and safety to families like Doña Maribel’s.

Families supported through the Caregivers Club program, which provides training, therapy, and social support for family caregivers, are now among those receiving assistance after the flooding in Montellano.

Volunteers from nearby communities, including San Marcos Arriba and Nuevo Renacer, have also joined the response. Together, they are helping families begin cleanup and recovery, offering hands-on support where it’s needed most.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated and supported these efforts!

Earth Day is a reminder that the future of our planet is connected to all of us.

Small actions, shared responsibility, and a commitment to care can create lasting change.

Together, we can build a healthier, more sustainable world.

Families have begun the difficult process of cleaning out their homes and coping with the loss of essential items after the flooding in Montellano last weekend. The elderly care home we support also lost critical equipment.

Right now, the greatest needs are food, hygiene supplies, mattresses, clothing, and home recovery support for many of the families we partner with, including Filin, a local mason many volunteers know.

If you’re able, you can support these families here: https://comunidadconnect.org/donate/
