Tip Tuesday: Promote Your Fund-A-Need Before It Starts

Don't wait until the program to introduce your Fund-A-Need levels.

Most organizations surprise their donors — and hesitation kills momentum.

Include giving levels in your event program. When donors can see how to give and where the money goes, they show up ready to raise their paddle.

Keep it visible. Make it simple. Raise more money.

More tips every Tuesday.

Tip Tuesday: Market Your Live Auction Lots Before the Event

If your donors are seeing your live auction items for the first time at the event, you're leaving money on the table.

When donors can research, plan, and coordinate with friends ahead of time, they show up prepared to bid their maximum.

Social media previews, email campaigns, even physical mailers — every touchpoint before the event pays off at the event.

More marketing. More giving.

Tip Tuesday: Know the Mission to Sell the Mission

Your auctioneer should do more than show up—they should show up prepared.

When your auctioneer takes the time to visit your organization, meet your team, and see your impact firsthand, they become a true advocate—not just a voice on stage.
That connection leads to more authentic storytelling… and stronger giving.

The 36th Annual Allie Awards at Hotel Phoenix Atlanta was everything. Incredible nominees, deserving winners, and a room full of the most talented event professionals in the Southeast. Honored to serve as emcee and auctioneer for such an amazing night.

To the Allie Foundation team, producers, designers, AV crew, and every volunteer — you crushed it.

Tip Tuesday: Be the "Funkle" Your Board Needs

My kid's friends all call me Uncle Shimmy. To your board? I'm the Funkle — fun + uncle.

Here's the thing: I can say the exact same things you've been telling your board for months, and it just lands differently coming from a new voice.

That's why your auctioneer is worth more than the bid caller for your live auction. A little outside motivation to your board or committee can be what sparks bigger gifts, sets the room up to give, and gets everyone leaning in.

Same message. Different messenger.

Tip Tuesday #5: Your bar program is part of your fundraising strategy.
(Happy Cinco De Mayo)

Most nonprofit event planners think about the auction lineup, the décor, the mission moment. The most sophisticated ones also think about the bar. Not to restrict it — to time it.

Here's what behavioral science actually tells us:

At 1–2 drinks, guests are warmer, more connected, emotionally primed — and more likely to raise a paddle.

Past 2.5–3 drinks, the opposite happens. Attention collapses. Bidding gets erratic. Your Fund-A-Need story lands in an empty room.

The practical playbook:
* Cocktail hour: let the social lubrication happen
* First 30–45 min of dinner: food buffers the alcohol, keeps guests ascending
* Live auction + Fund-A-Need: strike at 90–120 minutes — not 3 hours in
* Open bar during programming: many smart EDs quietly slow service during the FAN(paddle raise)

If guests aren't listening, they aren't giving.

Today is National Auctioneers Day!

To the nonprofits, committees, and event teams who trust me to step on stage and help raise money for missions that matter — thank you. You're the reason I do this work.

Being a benefit auctioneer isn't just about the chant. It's about reading a room, building energy, and turning generosity into impact — one paddle raise at a time.
Proud to be part of this community and even prouder to serve the causes that make our world better.

Happy National Auctioneers Day to my fellow Auctioneers! 🎸
