We’re proud to announce that O’Neal A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Hampton, Georgia, has officially been added to the Black Cemetery Network. This sacred site—and the ancestors resting there—deserve to be documented, protected, preserved, and remembered.

One cemetery at a time. One ancestor at a time. We will not let their history disappear.

PHASE 3 — WE’RE STILL MAKING IT HAPPEN.

Even as we continue working toward government partnerships, grants, and additional resources, Honor Thy Roots has not allowed the wait for funding to stop the work.

With what we have, we keep showing up. We keep moving forward. We keep honoring our ancestors.

Yesterday was Phase 3 of the Weems Slave Cemetery cleanup and preservation effort, powered by volunteers, community support, donations, and people who believe these sacred spaces deserve to be remembered.

We are clearing, flagging, documenting, preserving, and restoring dignity to sacred ground — one phase at a time.

A huge THANK YOU to every volunteer, descendant, donor, and supporter who continues to stand with us. And a special thank you to WSB-TV for coming out and capturing this important work and helping shine a light on the mission.

Imagine what we can accomplish as more partnerships and resources come alongside the work already happening. 🖤

Watching an 85-year-old elder come out to see the O’Neal A.M.E. Church and Cemetery with her own eyes truly touched our hearts. 🖤

Our elders should not have to wonder what happened to the sacred ground where their parents, grandparents, and ancestors were laid to rest. They deserve answers. They deserve dignity. And most importantly, their ancestors deserve to be protected and remembered.

At Honor Thy Roots Cemetery Preservation Inc., our prayer is that we can reconnect every family and every descendant possible directly to the land where their ancestors are buried.

This is bigger than clearing land or locating graves. This is about restoring connections that were broken generations ago.

Our elders carry the memories.
The land carries the evidence.
And the ancestors are still here. 🕊️

Tonight was INTENSE. They tried to set the stage for us to fail, but our ancestors had other plans.
I stood ten toes down, we spoke our truth, &
refused to be intimidated or silenced.

& when I left that meeting?
A RAINBOW stretched across the railroad tracks…

Call it what you want. I know what I felt.
The ancestors said, “We were right there with you.”

This fight is bigger than me.
We are protecting our ancestors,
our history, and sacred ground.
