Move-In Day Mafia provides decked out dorm rooms and monthly care packages (for 4 years) to students who have aged out of foster care, are unhoused, or grapple w/ financial hardships. WHO WE ARE

An initiative of Project Dreamlight, a 501c3 nonprofit and the brainchild of Hollywood veteran, TeeJ Mercer, MIDM is a "mob" of volunte

ers from all walks of life. We have banded together with our time AND talents to primarily support an underserved demographic within the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) community– the students who have aged out of foster care. We deliver dorm room makeover experiences, hope, and resources primarily to freshmen who make this life-changing transition without familial, financial, and emotional support. Plus, we have scholars who have experienced homelessness or who need more financial support completing their education. WHY WE DO IT

70% of kids in foster care dream of going to college. But circumstances knock that dream down and just 3% of these dreamers go on to earn their degree. Therefore, those who enroll in college are already beating the odds. However, HBCUs often don’t have the resources to adequately address the needs of these trailblazers. Our mission is to disrupt the "Foster care to Prison" pipeline and replace it with the "Foster care to HBCU GRADUATE pipeline.”

Foster care doesn’t magically end because somebody got accepted to college.

Foster Care Awareness Month isn’t just about understanding trauma.
It’s about recognizing potential.

These young people didn’t need pity. They needed support that stayed.

That’s why Move-In Day Mafia stays for FOUR years.

Move-In Day Mafia is a nonprofit that supports foster care and unhoused college scholars at HBCUs with dorm room makeovers, care packages, move-in support, and community for four years.

Foster care was part of their story. Not the end of it!

⚠️ Read these numbers slowly. They need to land.

🔴 70% of foster youth DREAM of going to college.
🔴 Only 3% actually enroll.
🔴 Of that 3%... only 1% graduate.

That is not a student problem.
That is a SYSTEM problem. 💥

And Move-In Day Mafia declared war on that system in 2022 — showing up with volunteers, care packages, mentors, and four years of unrelenting support for the students the pipeline was designed to swallow.

The foster-care-to-prison pipeline is real.

The foster-care-to-HBCU-graduate pipeline? That's what we're building. 🎓✊

Look at them rise!

Every one of these scholars had every reason not to make it this far.

Some lost parents to addiction.
Some aged out of foster care at 18 with nowhere to go.
Some survived abuse that would have broken most adults.
Some raised younger siblings while trying to survive high school themselves.

These scholars were handed trauma before opportunity.

And still…
LOOK AT THEM RISE.

Foster Care Awareness Month is about more than awareness. It’s about refusing to let these young people walk alone.

Our babies deserve more than a dorm key and a “good luck.”

They deserve people who keep showing up.

That’s why Move-In Day Mafia stays for FOUR years.

So when you see these scholars stepping into internships, research programs, apartments, study abroad trips, and opportunities they once thought were impossible…

Move-In Day Mafia has FOUR ways you can become a Mafia Miracle Maker — and one of them was made for you:

🏃🏾 Move-In Season Volunteer
You physically show up on HBCU campuses in late summer/fall. You carry boxes, hang decor, deep clean dorms, and help transform empty rooms into homes. This is for the ones who need to feel the mission in their hands.

📦 Care Package Mafioso (CPM)
You live near an HBCU. You receive bulk shipments, sort items into personalized packages, and hand-deliver them monthly to scholars. You become their bonus Auntie or Uncle. This is for the ones who want ongoing, face-to-face connection.

🤝 Student Support Team Mentor
You want direct, meaningful contact with scholars. You check in twice a month, provide emotional support, and become their accountability anchor. This pathway requires a full background check — because these students deserve safe relationships.

💻 Year-Round Volunteer
