Who needs a gym when you have a rope toy? 😂💪

Dancer, our Timneh African Grey, decided it was time to get a few pull-ups in while hanging completely upside down, of course.

Parrots are incredibly strong and agile, using their feet, beaks, wings, and core muscles to climb, swing, hang, and explore. For Dancer, though, we’re pretty sure this was just another day at the Georgia Aviary gym.

Excellent form, Dancer. We’ll be expecting another set. 😂🩶

Apparently, “step up” was not on her agenda. 😂

Our Blue-and-yellow Macaw was perfectly happy playing on the water cart when it was time to head back to her cage.

First came the charm offensive, rubbing her face on my hand and trying to convince me that being adorable should buy her a little more playtime.

When that didn’t work?

Temper tantrum. Bowls started hitting the floor. 😂

And then, after making sure everyone knew exactly how she felt about the situation, she finally gave in and stepped up.

Life with parrots: incredibly intelligent, incredibly affectionate…and incredibly opinionated.

We wouldn’t have it any other way. 💙💛

HELP NAME OUR MAUI SUNRISE MACAW

She is the smallest of the three rescued macaws and the one whose body bears the most serious consequences of prolonged neglect.

She arrived severely underweight and unable to stand or perch normally because of disabling injuries to both feet. Her right foot may eventually require amputation once she is strong enough for surgery, while her left foot has only limited function. She now relies on specially designed padded perches, nutritional rehabilitation and continuing veterinary care.

What makes this little girl extraordinary is her gentleness. Despite everything she endured, she has chosen to trust. She rests her entire body across her caregiver’s chest and falls asleep, completely vulnerable and finally secure. Although her powerful beak could cause a serious injury, she gently holds her caregiver’s finger with only the slightest pressure.

We selected four meaningful names that honor her courage, tenderness and new beginning. Cast your vote by reacting to this post:

❤️ Valor - Representing courage in the presence of suffering and everything she continues to face with extraordinary gentleness.

👍 Solace - A name meaning comfort during suffering, reflecting both the security she has found and the comfort now being provided to her.

🥰 Aurora - Representing the light of a new beginning while quietly honoring her identity as a Maui Sunrise macaw.

😮 Maui - A simple, dignified name that honors her hybrid identity, brilliant tropical colors and hopeful new beginning.

HELP NAME OUR BLUE-AND-YELLOW MACAW

When she was rescued, this beautiful girl had a severely overgrown beak and extensive feather damage caused by self-mutilation, visible evidence of the prolonged stress and neglect she had endured.

Despite everything, she was the first of the three macaws to reach out and trust us. She eagerly steps up, enjoys being held and seeks the closeness of gentle preening. Her affectionate personality reminds us that neglect may have damaged her feathers, but it did not take away her desire to love and be loved.

We selected four meaningful names that honor her personality and journey. Cast your vote by reacting to this post:

❤️ Grace - Honoring the affection and trust she continues to offer despite everything she endured.

👍 Amity - A name meaning friendship, reflecting her remarkable desire for human companionship.

🥰 Phoenix - Representing her emergence from severe neglect and the beginning of a completely new life.

HELP NAME OUR HARLEQUIN MACAW

She is the largest of the three macaws rescued from severe neglect, but underneath her impressive size is a gentle bird still learning that she is safe.

When she arrived, her veterinary fear assessment was the highest possible score: 5 out of 5. Even now, she often retreats when her cage is opened and carefully watches everything happening around her. Once she steps up, however, she reveals the quiet, gentle personality hidden beneath that fear.

We selected three meaningful names that honor her journey. Cast your vote by reacting to this post:

❤️ Vesper - A name associated with evening and quiet watchfulness, reflecting her cautious and observant nature.

👍 Patience - Honoring the time she needs to rebuild her confidence and the patience with which we will help her learn to trust.

🥰 Haven - Representing the safety and security she has finally found after living where she could never completely relax.

Please choose one reaction on this post to vote. Comments and shares are welcome, but only reactions will be included in the official count.

Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, September 17.

Every vote helps give this gentle girl something she has never truly had before: a name chosen with love and a community invested in her future.

Some toys are for playing nicely.

And then there’s Tonto. 😂🦜

When Tonto gets hold of his ball, he doesn’t just play with it, he gives it everything he’s got! Shake, rattle, repeat. Apparently, the proper way to enjoy a parrot toy is with maximum enthusiasm.

Enrichment like this is more than just fun. Parrots are intelligent, active animals, and toys give them opportunities to explore, exercise, problem-solve, and occasionally shake the living daylights out of a perfectly innocent ball.

Tonto definitely understood the assignment. 💚

NAME OUR NEWEST FLOCK MEMBERS

Three rescued macaws survived severe neglect. Now they need names worthy of their new beginning—and we would like your help choosing them.

On July 30, The Georgia Aviary assisted the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division with the removal of three female macaws from a North Georgia residence.

They were found confined in severely undersized cages with virtually no usable food or water. The air was so heavily contaminated by ammonia that rescuers wore N95 masks inside the home.

Each girl carries evidence of what she endured:

💙 The Blue-and-yellow Macaw arrived with extensive feather loss from severe self-mutilation and a badly overgrown beak.

🧡 The larger hybrid remains cautious and has displayed an extreme fear response to large dogs.

❤️ The smaller hybrid arrived dangerously underweight and unable to use either foot normally.

They are safe now and receiving specialized veterinary care, proper nutrition, enrichment and the individual attention they should always have known. But they still do not have public names.

We want their names to represent the lives ahead of them, not the conditions they left behind.

HOW TO SUGGEST NAMES

Leave your suggestions in the comments on this original pinned post using this format:

Blue-and-yellow Macaw:\
Larger hybrid:\
Smaller hybrid:

You may suggest names for one, two or all three birds, and you may submit more than one set of suggestions. We welcome names inspired by hope, strength, healing, Georgia, their beautiful colors, their emerging personalities or the promise of a new beginning.

Suggestions are free and will remain open through August 22.

After submissions close, The Georgia Aviary’s Executive Committee will review the eligible suggestions and select a small group of finalists for each macaw. During this first stage, likes and repeated comments will not count as votes, and the most-liked suggestion will not automatically become a finalist.

Public donation-powered voting among the finalists is scheduled to begin August 26. The three new names will be revealed September 18.

Please follow The Georgia Aviary so you do not miss the finalists, recovery updates or the final name reveal and share this post so more people can help welcome these remarkable girls into their new lives.

Let’s give them names that celebrate where they are going, not where they have been.

For the first time in far too long, she can rest without having to fight for food, safety or a place to sit.

Our smaller hybrid macaw arrived dangerously underweight and unable to use either foot normally. Her recovery remains uncertain, but she is eating eagerly, accepting her medications and beginning to trust the people caring for her.

Moments like this, when she closes her eyes and rests against a caregiver, remind us what rescue is really about. It is not only removing an animal from danger. It is helping her learn that she is finally safe.

She still needs intensive nutritional support, specialized veterinary care, daily monitoring and accommodations designed around her disabilities. We will continue doing everything possible to give her a chance.

🦜 An Update on Our Three Rescued Macaws 🦜

It has been a little over a week since three macaws came into the care of The Georgia Aviary after being removed from a severe neglect situation in North Georgia.

We wanted to share some recent photos and give everyone an update on how these three girls are doing.

First, some very good news:

All three macaws have tested NEGATIVE for all of the major infectious diseases for which they were screened. ❤️

They are eating, drinking, active, and beginning to settle into their new surroundings.

But while their recent photos may already show signs of improvement, their recovery is only beginning, and there is still a tremendous amount of work ahead.

💚 The Large Hybrid Macaw arrived at the very bottom end of the weight range she should be for a macaw of her size. She needs to gain weight and rebuild her overall body condition. She is eating well and showing encouraging behavior, but healthy recovery takes time.

💙💛 The Blue-and-yellow Macaw was also at the very bottom end of her expected weight range and needs to gain. She is also dealing with serious, longstanding feather destructive behavior affecting much of her body. At her initial veterinary examination, she had a severely overgrown scissor beak that required corrective trimming.

She has already shown herself to be incredibly friendly and enjoys interacting with her caregivers. But the physical and behavioral effects of prolonged neglect cannot simply be erased by moving her into a clean environment and giving her good food. Her recovery will be a much longer process.

💚The Small Hybrid Macaw remains our greatest concern.

She arrived severely underweight, with an initial body condition score of just 1.5 out of 5.

She has no functional use of one foot and only very limited use of the other. She cannot perch normally and has adapted by using her beak, body, and what limited function remains in her better foot to move around.

Her initial veterinary examination also revealed chronic and painful foot problems, sores and swelling, a heart murmur, and other medical concerns requiring medication and intensive supportive care.

There are reasons to be hopeful.

She is alert. She wants to eat. She drinks on her own. She eagerly accepts supplemental recovery food and continues to show us just how determined she is.

But she is still in significant danger and has a very long recovery ahead of her.

Right now, we are taking that recovery one day and sometimes one meal at a time while closely monitoring her weight, nutrition, mobility, comfort, feet, behavior, and overall health.

For all three macaws, the months ahead will require continued veterinary care, specialized nutrition, appropriate housing, enrichment, close monitoring, and a great deal of time.

Their lives are already very different from the ones they left behind.

They have clean water.

They have nutritious food.

They have safe places to rest.

They have enrichment.

They have people watching over them every day.

And they have all of you cheering them on. ❤️

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated, sent supplies, shared their story, or simply reached out to ask how they are doing.

Their rescue happened in a day. Their recovery will take much longer.

If you would like to help us continue providing everything these three macaws need:

If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing their story. Every share helps more people understand what it takes to give neglected parrots a genuine second chance.

Thank you for being part of their journey.

Three macaws. One urgent rescue. And a long road ahead.

One week ago, The Georgia Aviary was called to assist with an animal seizure in North Georgia. Because of our experience handling large parrots in emergency situations, we were asked to safely remove three female macaws, a Blue-and-yellow, a Harlequin and a Maui Sunrise.

All three are now in our care and receiving the specialized nutrition, housing and veterinary attention they need. One of them arrived severely underweight and with serious injuries affecting both feet. Her condition is the most urgent, and her fight is only beginning.

Over the coming days, we will introduce you to each of these remarkable birds, what their veterinary examinations revealed and what it will take to help them recover.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division is leading the ongoing investigation. To protect that investigation, we will not identify the individuals, address or specific county involved.

Their care began the moment we carried them out and we need your help to continue it.

Please donate to support their emergency veterinary care and recovery:
