We believe books are a gateway to understanding the universe and the boundless possibilities contained within it for every person, regardless of their life circumstances. By bringing the world to a child’s doorstep, reading pulls a child into the world as a critical thinker, an empathic individual, and an engaged citizen. We believe providing children with open, equal access to books allows them to connect the joy of reading with the thrill of discovery, laying the foundation for a successful, fulfilling life. Books for Keeps started as an effort to help one little girl who loved to read but didn't own a single book. It has grown into a research-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of improving literacy among low-income children. At the end of each school year, we give 12 books to every elementary school student attending an Athens-Clarke county school where 90% or more of students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. Additionally, Books for Keeps serves children at elementary schools in Atlanta, Warrenton, and Elberton, Georgia. This guarantees the children have access to books, regardless of income, proximity to a library, or family situation.

It's here! 🎉🎉🎉 Today marks the start of our 7TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY BOOK FAIR! Join us over the next two weekends at our warehouse and get your 💯 free books! The Community Book Fair would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Give them all a round of applause! 👏

📣 Today’s staff spotlight is on Mikey! 📣

Mikey is our Development Coordinator. Their days involve writing grant requests, completing grant reports, and sharing details about Books for Keeps with our community.

Outside of work, Mikey is generally being a nerd:

📚 A bookseller at Rec Room Books in downtown Athens running a book club on translated literature, booking events, and recommending weird-girl literature to everyone. And visiting other indie bookstores everywhere they go!
🐈 At home with their twin (Gemini) cats Beatrice (long-hair torbie) and Hero (short-hair tortoiseshell).
💙 Cheering on the Buffalo Bills.
🎲 Playing Dungeons & Dragons and other TTRPGs with friends and watching live-plays like Dimension 20 and Critical Role.
🎸 Playing saxophone for their Dad’s church & learning bass guitar.
🗡️ Immersed in anything Medieval and Early Modern, whether that’s seeing live Shakespeare (they’ve seen 36 of 38 plays live!) or going to the Renaissance Festival.

Their contributions support literacy for all here in Athens and beyond! Many of our sponsors have returned each year to help keep community book access FREE through the Community Book Fair. 🎉

The 7th Annual Community Book Fair is open October 16*, 17*, 18, and 22-24. October 16 is Public Educators Day (public school pay-stub or ID required) and October 17 is Early Access Day ($10 Entry). All other days are free and open to the public.
