Today marked the conclusion of the 2.5-day Commercial Fishing Safety Training in Cathlamet, Washington. Over the past three days, students and fishermen gained hands-on experience in emergency preparedness, cold-water survival, firefighting, first aid, damage control, and other critical skills that could one day save a life.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Of the nine students and fishermen who responded, seven felt a longer and more in-depth class would be beneficial for future participants. Even more encouraging, every participant said they would recommend the training to future students and fishermen.

Bravo to the students who participated and fully embraced this opportunity. Their engagement, professionalism, and willingness to learn made the training a success.

And thank you to everyone who said “yes” to making this possible in Cathlamet. From our amazing instructor, Robert, to the volunteers, supporters, and organizations that came together behind the scenes, this opportunity existed because people believed it was worth investing in our students, our fishing families, and our community.

Opportunities like this do not happen on their own. They happen when people work together, invest in one another, and recognize the value of preparing the next generation by simply saying, “yes.”

Thank you all.

“In fishing families and small communities, we often carry one another through life’s hardest moments. We understand that when one family hurts, the ripple reaches farther than a single household.

This is one of those times.
Every act of kindness matters. Sometimes support looks like a meal. Sometimes it helps keep a roof overhead. Right now, all of it matters.“

——- from a friend close to the family——

Those who knew Geraldine knew her deep love for the people around her. Her family shared that she wanted to be remembered through the good times, the laughter, and the love she gave so freely.

Geraldine leaves behind Darrin and two young sons who are now navigating life without her. She also leaves behind older children carrying their own grief and heartbreak, including a daughter preparing to welcome Geraldine’s first grandchild — a milestone no family imagines facing without their mom by their side.

During her illness, Darrin, a commercial fisherman from Garibaldi, spent months by her side and missed a significant amount of work while caring for her. As the family adjusts to this unimaginable loss, one of the most immediate needs is help with rent and household stability.

For those who have asked how to support, immediate financial support for rent and household expenses can be sent directly to:

CashApp: https://cash.app/$DarrinSchiel

If you would like to provide a meal to the family please reach out to Darrin directly at 503-801-7567.

Ways to help:
• Contribute toward rent and immediate household needs
• Sign up for the meal train
• Keep the family in your thoughts and prayers

In fishing families and small communities, we often carry one another through life’s hardest moments. We understand that when one family hurts, the ripple reaches farther than a single household.

This is one of those times.
Every act of kindness matters. Sometimes support looks like a meal. Sometimes it helps keep a roof overhead. Right now, all of it matters.

Please continue to keep Geraldine, Darrin, their boys, and all who loved her in your thoughts and prayers.
