Astoria Lions Starts Another Season at Astoria Sunday Market – May 17, 2026

May 18, 2026 – Astoria Lions is pleased to announce its return for a 6th season at the Astoria Sunday Market. As in past years, several visitors dropped by to welcome us back. Our tent was visited by two Lions from Vancouver (WA) who took pictures of our table display and our space’s prominent banner (see photos below). We naturally discussed our club activities and we gave them a number of our club promotional items for consideration by their club. It’s always good to see fellow Lions.

We will have our tent at our usual space ( #140) on the following Sundays: June 7th, June 21st, July 5th, July 19th (with tent partner KMUN Community Radio), August 2nd, August 16th, September 6th, September 20th, and October 11th (last market). Visitors are welcome to bring their used eyeglasses, cell phones, hearing aids, and empty printer cartridges for recycling. Our tables will offer Lion rocks, assistance applications, club promotional materials, stickers, and treats. One or more typewriters will be available as well. New for this year are small 3-D printed Lions figures (with moveable legs) in different color configurations.

We encourage all of our friends and community service partners to stop by and say hello! Photos of Sunday’s tables are shown below.

Spring Wayside Clean-up Completed by Astoria Lions – May 5, 2026

May 15, 2026 – After our club meeting, Astoria Lions met on May 5th at the Lewis & Clark River Bridge Wayside to clean-up the site.

A quarterly event, Lions Ron and Charlene Larsen, Ray Montgomery, and Jimmy Heater weeded, picked up wayside trash (not much), cut back blackberry brambles, and patches of dandelions. Lion Jimmy took care of the raised flower box and prepped it for planting.

When finished, yellow collection bags filled with clippings were piled close to the road for collection by the local DOT office. Thank you, Lions!

Photos of the crew in action are shown below.

2025-26 Lions International Peace Poster Contest Club/District O Winner Announced – December 4, 2025

January 27, 2026 – Apologies for this late submission.

On December 4, 2025, Astoria Lions met in the 6th Grade classroom at the Hilda Lahti Elementary School to announced the club and District O winner of the 2025-26 International Peace Poster Contest. Sponsored globally by Lions International and locally by Astoria Lions, Contest Chairperson Lion Charlene Larsen and Club President Lion Ray Montgomery announced the contest winning poster, presented a winner’s certificate, and certificates of appreciation for all other entrants. Both 6th Grade classes were brought together in Lion (and 6th Grade teacher) Wendy Montgomery’s classroom for the presentation.

Student posters were reviewed and judged by 9 artists associated with The Art Loft studio and gallery in Astoria. This group judged all the entries and selected finalists from which the winner would be chosen. The finalists were judged by Lion club members at their November 5, 2025 meeting, with the winner selected by secret vote. The winner was Madalyn Ross. She was presented with a contest certificate and a club certificate. After the winner was announced, the class applauded at length and students congratulated the winner.

Madalyn’s poster was entered in the District O contest held in November 2025. By a voice vote, Madalyn’s poster was selected as the District O winner. Her poster will now compete against winners submitted by District R, E, and G Lions clubs. The Multi-District 36 winner will be selected at our convention in February 21, 2026, in McMinnville. The Multi-District 36 winner will compete with posters from other U.S. Lions Clubs. The U.S. winner will be entered into the international contest.

The winning poster was retained by District O for follow-on contests. At the end of the international contest cycle, Madalyn’s poster will be returned to her.

The following students entered posters: Noah Alomari, Emmett Bangs, Skyler Beedle, Elainah Bilyeu, Alfred Caron, RJ Defrates, Chloe Evans, Jessi Finn, Asa Gates, Brynn Jasper, Levi Miller, Izzy Milligan, Hunter Meier, Lukas Miehe, Kasey Nash, Matthew Pina-Morton, Isaiah Rinell, Adalyn Rodriguez, Madalyn Ross (Club and District O Winner), Lukas Sherman, Ila Stunkard, and Addie Weaver.

In closing, we want to thank everyone for making the contest a successful event. And good luck to our winner!

Looking forward to next year’s contest!
