Why do some people struggle with substance use and while others don't?

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a complex medical condition, and a person's risk is influenced by a combination of factors, many of which are out of their control:

🧬 Genetics: Genetics account for approximately 50% of a person's risk, along with co-occurring mental health conditions and individual brain chemistry.

🏡 Environment: Family dynamics, peer influence, trauma, and economic stress can all play a role in the development of a Substance Use Disorder.

🧠 Development: Early exposure to alcohol or drugs, especially during adolescence, increases risk because the brain is still developing in areas responsible for decision-making and impulse control.

Understanding these factors can help reduce stigma and remind us that SUD is a complex ✨ but treatable ✨ medical condition, NOT a moral failing or lack of willpower.

Millions of people struggle with substance use, and millions go on to build healthy, fulfilling lives in recovery: It’s all about getting the right support for where you are in your journey.

If you're struggling with substance use and aren't sure where to start, we're here to help.

Meet Lilly, our oldest Shire at 11 years old!

As a young horse, Lilly suffered a fractured growth plate, an injury that affected her development and continues to require specialized care. Over the years, she's also developed osteoarthritis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome, making careful management of her health, nutrition, and comfort essential.

Caring for Lilly takes a team effort. Her care includes:
🙌 Ongoing veterinary care through Alpine Equine Hospital
🙌 Specialized treatments, including Induced Wrapping Regenerative and Anti-Inflammatory therapy during her rehabilitation
🙌 Osteoarthritis medications and joint injections
🙌 Equine chiropractic care approximately every six weeks
🙌 A carefully managed nutrition plan to support healthy body condition
🙌 Continuous monitoring to ensure her activities match her individual needs

We're incredibly grateful to Alpine Equine Hospital for their expert veterinary care and guidance throughout Lilly's recovery journey. Because of this collaborative approach, Lilly continues to thrive and remains an important member of our herd.

Our horses give so much to the individuals who participate in our Equine-Assisted Learning and Therapeutic Riding programs. Providing them with the specialized care they need and deserve is one of the most important investments we can make 💙

Supporting a loved one in recovery starts with understanding the difference between helping and enabling.

Recovery is a personal journey. And while you can't do the work for someone else or force them to change, you can provide encouragement, accountability, and a healthy, supportive environment that gives them the best opportunity possible to succeed.

Healthy Support Looks Like:
✅ Encouraging treatment and ongoing recovery support
✅ Setting clear, healthy boundaries (“You can’t live here if you’re drinking/using.”)
✅ Creating a recovery-supportive environment (such as not drinking or using around your loved one and keeping non-alcoholic beverages on hand)
✅ Celebrating progress without expecting perfection
✅ Taking care of your own mental and emotional health

Unhealthy Support (Enabling) Looks Like:
❌ Making excuses for another’s harmful behaviors
❌ Shielding someone from the consequences of their choices (such as providing money, housing, or other support that allows the behavior to continue)
❌ Taking personal responsibility for another’s recovery, actions, or emotions
❌ Ignoring your own needs to focus on theirs
❌ Believing you can save, change, or force someone who isn't ready for recovery

✅ Establecer límites claros y saludables ("No puedes vivir aquí si estás bebiendo/consumiendo").

For many people, substance use begins as a way to cope with difficult emotions, painful experiences, and unresolved trauma. While substances may provide temporary relief, they don't address the underlying causes of emotional pain.

Healing from trauma often involves learning new ways to work through difficult emotions and experiences, manage stress, and reconnect with yourself and others.

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is one of many approaches that can support this healing process. By interacting with horses through guided activities, participants have opportunities to practice emotional regulation, communication, trust, and self-awareness in a safe, supportive environment. Because horses are highly attuned to human emotions and body language, they provide immediate, honest feedback without judgment.

Recovery is about more than stopping substance use. It's about healing, growing, and developing the skills needed to build a healthier, happier, more fulfilling life.

If you've tried talk therapy or other traditional approaches and still feel like something is missing, Equine-Assisted Learning may be a valuable complement to your recovery journey. We offer donor-supported sessions on a sliding scale to help make our programs accessible to anyone who may benefit, regardless of their ability to pay.

What started with one woman’s vision has grown into a comprehensive network of programs and services that helps people overcome addiction, homelessness, and other serious life challenges.

Before founding Recovery Resources, our Executive Director, Janelle Duhon, worked in a local detox center, where she met a client who forever changed her perspective. Despite experiencing homelessness and living with the long-term effects of addiction, he never lost his kindness. He would send pizzas to the detox center staff or call just to ask, "Has anyone wished you well today?"

His compassion inspired a simple but powerful realization: recovery is about much more than detox. People need connection, support, life skills, and access to resources that help them find stability and build a full and meaningful life.

In 2016, Recovery Resources opened with just two services: Withdrawal Management and Drug Testing.

Over the past decade, we've listened to our community and evolved to meet emerging needs.

Today, we're proud to offer:
🙌 Withdrawal Management
🙌 DUI Education and Therapy
🙌 Pretrial Services
🙌 Drug Testing
🙌 UPS Community Service Coordination
🙌 Unsheltered Outreach and Daily Basic Needs Services at our Community Connection Point
🙌 A full suite of Equine Programs, including Equine-Assisted Learning & Therapeutic Riding

To everyone who has been part of our mission over the last 10 years—our staff, partners, donors, and especially our clients—thank you for being part of this journey.

Here's to the next decade of empowering people to create a new story of recovery and resilience 💙

🙌 Pruebas de Dr**as
